The Northwestern Wire Mattress company announced to Its employes that their wages would be advanced 10 per cent. The company now employs T-'u men and will shortly employ J. 000. Guthrie. 0. T. Judge Rurfjrd of the United States court sent Charles Base to the penitentiary for five years for passing one counterfeit nickel. Stanley, Wis. Ole P. Iligholt, an engineer, was caught between a belt and a pulley in the planing mill of the Northwestern Lumber company and killed. Lostant, 111. Alfred 1. Osgood, a prominent lumber dealer and extensive land owner, died as the result of an accident which he suffered about a month ago. Tekin. 111. Henry Wyatt was lodged In the Tazewell county jail on an indictment charging him with being one of the murderers of Perry Green at Delavan two years ago. He was arTested in Peoria county. John Blackburn and X. C. Dowey are indicted on the same charge. Blackburn has been arrested, but Dowey is still at large. Peoria, 111. Annie Tracy, 16 years of fige, ran away from home Saturday, and when her mother sent an officer to arrest her the child swallowed a dose of tincture of iodine. She is in a hospital and will probably die. Sioux City, Iowa The receipts for one day of the Sioux City Traction company, v.hich operates all the street car lines n the city, weie donated to the Morniagside college fund as a part of $30,000 promised by Sioux City. Berlin, Wis. August Smith, who recently attempted to kill his wife with an ax and then hacked himself with the ax and took poison, has been taken to the Northern Hospital for the Insane, near Oshkosh. His wife is recovering. Kankakee, 111. A second case of smallpox was discovered, the victim being a negro woman whose husband works in the quarry. She was in a boarding-house with twelve other negroes. The place has been quarantined. Madison, Wis. John Walsh, a petty officer of the cruiser Raleigh of Admiral Dewey's fleet, who is on his way from Xew York visit relatives in Minneapolis, was robbed on a train of all his money, some $C0, and reached Madison without a cent. Madison, Wis. The remains of Paul Scofleld were taken to Oconto. The body was accompanied by Gov. and Mrs. Scofleld, George Scoiield, the governor's son; Mrs. Grunert of Oconto, a cousin; Col. W. J. Anderson, the governor's secretary ,and Adjt.-Gen. Boardman. Dayton, Ohio While being exhibited to a large crowd, Hing, one of the trained elks owned by Prof. W. H. Barnes of Sioux City, Iowa, was drowned in Fairview lake. The elks would dive from a high platform and ewim ashore. While swimming Ring got tangled in his harness. Sioux Falls, S. D. Two sons of J. D. Casteel, one H and the other 10, on the Yankton Indian reservation, were suddenly taken ill and died before a physician could be called. Investigation showe-I that the boys had eaten raw potatoes that had been frozen in the winter and thawed out. Nashville.. 111. The body of William Meyer, Jr., the wealthy young farmer who so mysteriously disappeared from his country residence last Monday, was discovered near his home with a bullet wound in the head. It is thought he was murdered. Washington The projected German cable will touch at the Azores and will be worked by the Commercial Cable company and the Postal Telegraph company. Detroit, Mich. The biwuWal grand division convention of the Order of Railway Conductors met in th-Is city. Washington. Gen. Wop. who commanded the Spanish forces in the Philippines, has been authorized to return Ig Spain. New York. The Sewing Machine Attachment company, with a capital stock of $.",00,000, incorporated in Delaware.

Sliarcokin, Pa. Four men were instantly killed by a slide of a portion of a large culm bank at Centralia. Pari.-;, Texas A reviewing stand on whim were seated 4,000 persons, witnessing a display of fireworks, fell. No one was killed, but a great number were injured, some probably fatally. Hochester, N. Y. The National Banking company's three-story building was burned. Loss, about $100.000. Sparklets. Pa. William Wo'cott. brakeman on a construction train on the Pittsburg and Western railroad, was killed. The train jumped off a trestle. Six were injured. Seattle. Wash. The North American Transportation and Trading Company of Chicago lost $.10,000 in a fire at Hamilton, on the Yukon, last month. Sheboygan. Wis. Alexander Vollrath of this city and John Dewey of Baltimore, students at the Franklin Mission college, twelve miles from this city, were drowned in Jetzers lake by a boat capsizing. Dalton, Ga The residence of Dr. L. C. Bagwell, ten miles east, was burned. Dr. Bagwell, his three children, and their negro housekeeper were burned to death. It is supposed a lamp exploded. Toledo. O. Bernard W. Layton. assistant sergeant-at-arms of the United States senate, is lying dangerously injured at St. Vincent's hospital, the result of a fall. Iebanon, Pa. The large flour mill of E. Strickler's Sons was destroyed by fire. The less is estimated at $tr,000. Xanlucket. Mass. Maj. L. C. Overman. U. S. A., retired, was instantly killed by falling from a staging on which he was working at his summer home. Lancaster, Pa. Anna M. Esponshade, 27 years old. was accidentally burned to death in her home. Ogdensburg, N. Y. Harry McRostie, while sailing on the St. Lawrence, fell from bis yacht and was drowned. FOREIGN, London Herbert Lloyd of Edwara Lloyd (limited), the proprietor of the Daily Chronicle, is dead. Paris The minister of war, H. Camilie Krants. signed a degree cashiering Major Cuignet on account of his having divulged to the Petit Journal the contents of certain letters. Birmingham, England At a meeting of the committee of Birmingham university a resolution was adopted gratefully accepting the offer of Mr. Carnegie to donate 50,000 to the university. London The Daily Mail declares a group of American and English literary agents has formed a syndicate for the purpose of controlling tlie future productions of Rudyard Kipling. London Mr. Inskip, secretary of the Boot and Shoe Operatives union, who recently visited the United States, is dead. London Dr. Joseph C. Hartzell of Cincinnati, American Methodist Episcopal bishop of Africa, has returned to London from Liberia, on his way to the United States. Odessa, Russia An insane customs official murdered his five sleeping children and then attacked his wife, who is dying of her wounds. St. Petersburg The czarina has given 50,000 rubles for the relief of sufferers in the famine-stricken districts of Russia. Paris The British-Venezuela arbitration, which was to begin May 24, has been postponed until June 15. Paris The French government is making inquiries as to American coal with a view to adopting it for the use of the French navy. Berlin. Admiral von Diedrichs has been granted a leave of absence ior three months. Paris. An interpellation of the government on the retirement of M. de Freycinct caused excitement in the chamber, but the order of the day was finally voted 444 to C7. CRIME. Auburn, N.Y. The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tincknall were found in their rooms. The man was dead, without a mark on him; the woman had her head battered in. New York Dr.J.Owen.C. R. Brackett and W. R. Torrance, saloon passengers on the Teutonic, which arrived from Liverpool, were arrested on the pier. Capt. McClusky believes they are professional card sharps. Dover, Del. William X. Boggs, e defaulting teller of the national bank, has been sentenced to five years in the Trenton (N. J.) penitentiary and a fine of $6,500. Alexandria. Ind. While working together in the Union steel mill Gillam Graves and Andrew Blunk became involved in a quarrel. Graves struck Blunk over the head and pushed him upon a piece of hot iron, burning him so badly that he cannot live. tH?catur. Neb. John Egleton and Oscar Zeager quarreled over the boundary line of their property, and Egleton struck Zeager on the head with a singletree. Zeager was picked up hieensible and never rallied, dying in a few hours. Washington. Ellsworth De France, convicted of the highway robbery of a mail messenger in 1893 and sentenced for life, has had his sentence commuted by President McKinley to fifteen years. Cumberland, Md. William Parish, a negro 18 years old, was shot and killed by John Meyers, white. Mayers, it is rqid, caught the negro attempting a felonious assault upon Mrs. Kate llaier, an aged white woman. Alexandria, Ind. John Ramlot was shot and instantly killed by Buckley Williams while stealing chickens from the latter' coop.

Lord, chief clerk in the bureau of labor statistics. has resigned to become chief of the division of population in the twelfth census Harrisburg. Pa. The statue to the memory of Maj.-Gen. John F. Hartranft was unveiled in Capitol park. Saginaw, Mich. Erastus T. Judd. one of the most prominent men in this section of the state, and for thirty years president of the First National bank of East Saginaw, until its disas trous failure three years ago. is dead. Montevideo, Uruguay The American cruiser Newark has arrived at this port Auburn, X. Y. Rev. George D. Stew art, D. D., of Harrisburg. Pa., has been elected president of Auburn Iheolog ical seminary, to succeed the late Hen ry D. Booth. Madison. Wis. Paul Schofield, the youngest son of Gov. Schofield, who has been ill for about two years with tuberculosis of the lungs, died here. He was 25 years old. San Francisco The twelve Filipinos who arrived a week ago have been ordered deported. The pirty consists of ten adults and two children. New York Ex-President Harrison has accepted the place of honorary president of the general committee of the ecumenical conference on foreign missions, to be held In 1900. Xew York The United States trans port Buford, Capt. Stinson. has arrived from San Juan, Ponce, and Santiago, having on board C00 discharged soldiers from various regiments. Oshkosh, Wis. Tim Murphy, the comedian, is better, and will recover unless complications set in. Peoria, 111. Martin Kingman, head of the Kingman Plow compan3r, said that his company was not in the combination effected at Chicago. Washington The remains of Gen. H. C. Egbert, the officer who was killed in the Philippines, have been interred at Arlington cemetery. Lake Flower, X. Y. The body of Robert S. Tracy of New York was found. Tracy disappeared over a month ago from a sanitarium at Saranac Lake. Washington George Earle, a lawyer of prominence, assistant postmaster general under President Grant, died of heart disease. New York After occupying the position of president of the National Academy of Design fifteen years, Thomas Waterman Wood retired in favor of Frederick Dielman. New York The Samuel J. Tilden residence in Gramercy park was sold at auction in the Xew York salesroom for $180,000. New York Gen. O. O. Howard has been re-elected president of the American Tract society. Trenton. N. J. A combination of seven Pacific coast biscuit, cracker and candy companies has been perfected. It has been incorporated under the laws of New Jersey, and is known as the Pacific Coast Biscuit company.
