CASUALTIES. Atwood, Kan. The town of SL Francis, county seat of Cheyenne county, Kansas, was visited by a fire which left but one business building standing. The loss is not far short of 1100,000. Lula, Miss. Fire destroyed more than $100,000 worth of property in the business portion of this city. The Yazoo and Mississippi station was among the buildings burned. Glenwood, Iowa The hospital building of the state asylum for the feebleminded was totally destroyed by fire. Loss, $23,000; no insurance. Buntyn Station, Tenn. Co!. Hugh D. Greer, a well-known ex-confederate soldier, who served throughout the civil war under Gen. Forrest's command, was accidentally killed by a railway train.

Ardmore, I. T. The town of Cheek, near here, was fntirely destroyed by fire. The loss is heavy. Continental. Ohio The Buckeye stave works burned. Loss, $15,000; insurance, $5.000. Cincinnati, Ohio J. W. Breed, president of the Central Credit company, was killed instantly in this city by an electric car. He was ;0 years old. Easton. Pa. Three men were killed by a fall of slate in the Pen Argyle valley quon y at Pen Argyle. Tnickce, Cal. Casper Lano, a private of company A, Thirteenth infantry, en route to Manila, was run over and killed here by a locomotive. Milwaukee, Wis. The packing plant oi i. c. Gross & Bros, company was damaged by fire to the extent of $23,0G0. One car load of hogs was burned before the cars could be moved. Madison, Wis. Matt Stubbley, a farm hand, was run over and instantly killed by the Portage passenger train. ;sew urieans. La. A crevasse broke out in the Bayou la Fourche, between Lockport and Raceland. C The trial of the famous McCormick conspiracy case, growing out of the Phoenix election riot and lynching in Greenwood county last November, ended in the federal court with a verdict of not guilty. Hillsboro, Tex. Thomas Robinson, colored, was hanged for having assaulted Mary Adams, a white woman. Ellsworth, 111. Five men blew open the safe in tive bank Of C. A. Sh'mkle, jecHred $1,100 and made their escape, although fired at several times by citizens. Centralra, Wis. Ralph C. Worthington, aged 70, father of Dr. H. S. Worthington of Oak Park, Chicago, committed suicide at his borne by shooting. Nfew York Alleged bribe taking is said to be the direct cause of the suspension of twenty-two customs inspectors who have been under surveillance for several weeks. Riverside, Cal. Vaten Vasquez has been convicted of murder in the second d-egree for the killing of G. Almandarez last January. New York Hiram Y. Ka-ukman, 4S years of age, a former district attorney of Dorks county, Pennsylvania, was arrested in Jersey City as a fugitive from justice. He Is accused of embezzling $948.40 from the estate of his ward. Dubuque, Iowa Oliver Campbell Fish and his wife were before the United States commissioner charged with the theft of $6,000 worth of merchandise at ErmsKlale, Ont. They agreed to waive their rights and return to Canada at once. Pasadena, Ca! Hillary S. Starr, superintendent of Oak Knoll ranch, has strangely disappeared and the indications are that be was murdered. Norfolk, Va. When Alexander Tate was sentenced to be hanged for the murder of Charles Malone he declared impressively that he was innocent oi the crime.

The apple, pear and cherry crop in Clay and adjoining Illinois counties promises to be larger than ever before. San Francisco The United States transports Senator and Ohio sailed for the Philippines, carrying the Thirteenth infantry, several hundred recruits and supplies for the army and navy. Havana The British consul-general. Lionel G. Carden, sailed for England. Mr. Griffith, the vice-consul of Mexico, will be temporarily in charge of the British consulate. New York Sixty-seven pictures were put up at the Fifth Avenue Art gallery, and the total amount realized in the bidding was $18.413. The highest amount bid for a single picture was $2.200. for BoT'guereau's "Pandora." Havana Gen. Ludlow will spend $333,000 on sewering and paving the streets of Havana and on other engineering work. Toledo, Ohio Major E. O. Brown, prominent on the staff of Gen. Hartsuff during the late war, died, aged 54 years. He was one of the most prominent men in G. A. K. circles in

Cleveland, Ohio Nearly 100 surviv ors of the Sultana disaster gathered in annual convention, the occasion being the thirty-fifth anniversary of the event. The Sultana was a Mississipp river boat, Mink April 27, 1SG4, with a loss of hundreds of lives. Washington Rear Admiral Howel has been relieved as senior member of the naval retiring board. In response to the offers of Aguintfdo for negotiations to conclude the Struggle in the Philippines, Gen. Otis said he would be glad to receive emissaries from the insurgent congress, providing they came with a proposidon for an absolute surrender. These rere the only terms he could consider. Bell, who led the detachment of the Fourth United States (regular) cavalry Into the stronghold of the Filipinos near Malolos, has a fine record as a soldier. The books of the war department show that he was appointed to the army from civil life after having distin guished himself in the war of the rebellion. He began his career as a soldier in 1S62 as a lieutenant of the Spain Accepts tbe S20.O0Ü.000. The French ambassador at Wash ington has accepted for Spain the 20,000,000 to be paid under the treaty of peace for the Philippines. Chicago Woman Chosen President.
