A LITERARY JOURNAL. It has been now almost two years since Literature, an international journal of litprary criticism was offered to the American public by Harper & Brothers. It was at that time a purely English publication, under the editorial management of H. O. Traill, and printed by the Ixmdon Times. Harper fc Brothers merely imprinting the sheets. The periodical met with the entiro favor of all who are in any way interested in the news and events of the literary world. In no other publication could so complete and accurate information about books be found, and it soon became the acknowledged criticism of literary affairs, because its reviews were written by stich critics as William Dean HowelK Edmund Gossa and Henry James. The judgment of such men is as near final as possible, and the readers of Literature could very easily determine what books of the enormous number published, were worth reading and why. The periodical is. therefore, practically indispensable to all who wish to keep in close touch with the authors and the literature of the age. It is scholarly, unbiased and clearsighted in every respect. But a few weeks ago Harper & Brothers decided to publish the periodical on this side of the water because of the constantly increasing demand for it. John Kendrick Bangs was chosen as editor, and we have the first purely literary journal based on European models in America. It is well worth while to send twenty-live cents to Harper &. Brothers, New York city, for a trial subscription. This is a special offer the publishers are making, in order to allow new readers to see the periodical without spending too much money before they know what it is. WINNIPEGOSIS LETTER. Prom Dennis Twohfy Who Went From ADttIn, Minn.. March. 1898. Winnlpegosis. Man., Jan. 23. 1S99. Benjamin Davies, Eq., Canadian Government Agent, St. Paul. Minn.. Dear Sir: I have great pleasure in writing you these few lines to let you know how I like my new location and how I have been getting along since I left Southern Minnesota. I like this country well, the climate agrees with me and my family at all seasons, and taken all around it is away ahead of Minnesota. I may say that we have not had one storm yet this winter. As regards the productives of the soil, I consider it beats Southern Minnesota. I am a practical farmer, but have never seen such vegetables in my life as I have seen raised here. As regards grain of all kinds, I have seen splendid yields, in fact an man who cannot get along here and make a good living cannct do it anywhere. We have abundance of wood for fuel, timber for building, and lots of hay. I have got good water on my place about 24 feet. I have a good class of neighbors around me. and have been well used by everybody. I have been able to get lots of work for myself and team at fair wages, whenever 1 wanted it, and I think any one else can do the same. I would not care to return to Minnesota. I am, sir, yours very trulv, (Signed) DENNIS TWO HEY. The government has agents in several of the states, any of whom will be pleased to give you information, as to free homestead lands to those desiring it.
PAINTS CHILD'S LIKENESS. Woman Artist Ln;ageil on Tort raits of Anglo-Indians. Portrait painting may not be the highest form of art, according to the highest authority, but it certainly brings to the artist a more lucrative re turn than other branches of painting. Miss Aimee Osborne Moore, an Eng lish artist, having adopted America as her home, has not only gained a repu tation, but has reaped a financial sue cess by the painting of portraits of children and young girls. At the world's fair Miss Moore won the Co lumbian medal for a series of mechan ical aids for the student. Miss Moore, who lived for many years in the East Indies, will summer in Europe and paint the portraits of a number of An glo-Indian children. Despite her success, Miss Mcore is a woman of delightful simplicity and possesses the quiet repose and charmingly modulated voice for which her people are noted. A Tet. TICKETS MUST BE RtDEEMED.
Some Information About Theater Seat ot (ieneralljr Known. From the New York Sun: The fact that a ticket bought for a theater and not tioed on the date stamped on it Is always good for an admittance is not generally known, and probably theater managers would take very little trouble to spread knowledge of the fact; hut it is nevertheless true. "A man who buys a reserved seat for a theater," said a theater treasurer who handles more tickets every season than any other in New York, "may not use it on the evening for which he bought it. T.ood for this date only may be stamped on the pasteboard. That would seem to mean that the ticket could be used at no other time. Probably most of the public accepts that as proving the impossibility cf making use of the ticket, and therefore few make any attempt to get the worth of their money when they were prevented by any cause from using the ticket on the date marked on it. But it could be presented at any time and would be good for an admission. Any theater manager would have to recognize the holder's right to enter the theater, although that would, of course, carry with it no rieht to the seat. It is that right which is limited by the printed date. For all other purposes the ticket is quite as good as if used on the date it bears." Siberia Will Have an Kxliibit.
