Boise, Idaho Carl Kent of Ort. Fremont county. Idaho, was frozen to death while hunting at Warm Springs. His body wan found within a few yards of the camp. Leathers, for several years a member of the republican state central committee, and delegate to the national convention in 1S92, died in Tallahassee, Fta. Oscar Wheelock. an old and wealthy resident of Penn, Cass county, was kicked to death by a mad horse. Marquette. Wis. Nellie Howard was burned to death in a lire in a boarding; house. She had no relatives here. Christiania. Dr. Nansen considers it highly improbable that the bodies found between Komo and the Pit river, Siberia, an; thosa of Prof. Andree and his companions. Oviedo, Spain. The forest fires -hich have been raging in the mountains northwest of this city, destroying the villages of Villar. Hurias, I,anacos and Casavide, have finally been extinguished. Toledo, O. Vincent Shibenski deliberately fired a revlover into a crowd of small boys, killing Stephen Bloshoski and seriously wounding two others. Youngstown, O. By an explsion at an iron furnace Patrick Moore was instantly killed and five other employes badly hurt. Cobden, 111. Virgil I. Grubbs of Centralia, an Illinois Central brakeman, fell between two cars six miles north of Cobden and was killed. The body was dragged five miles. New York Liquor men are organizing an opposition to the liquor trust, It is a local effort, but it promises to he of large proportions. It is fathered by several of the leading wholesale liquor dealers in New York, and their plans are nearly perfected. Colorado Springs. Colo. James N Holmes, a prospector, has been found frozen to death on Pike's peak. Milwaukee, Wis. Henry Viaden. the well-known landscape artist, died at his home in Layton Fark. a suburb of Milwaukee. He was a5 years old. Washington. Major Henry O. Heis tand of the adjutant-general's depart ment has been detailed as military attache of the United States commis sioners to the Paris exposition. Casco, Wis. George Krecma. a well-to-do farmer, aged T.3. was killed by being kicked by a horse. Milwaukee, Wis. The Methodist Ministers' Association indorsed the proposed ""marriage license law and appointed a committee to work for the passage of the law. Kankakee. Ill Dr. .1. C. Cowper was killed and Charles TrufMlay and Jerry Crowley severely hv.rt in a head-end collision that occurred on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul road near here. Both engines were wrecked and eighteen loaded cars smashed. Frankfort. Ky. The governor's mansion was totally destroyed by fire. The firemen were disabled by the intense cold, to which trouble was added frozen pipes and cutting off of the water supply. Most of Gov. Bradley s valuable personalty was saved. Ann Arbor, Mich. The home of Mrs. James Stafford burned. Lo?s $3.000, partially insured. . Delaware. O. The furnishing store of Grail Brothers. Delaware, O.. burned, causing a loss of about $10,000. Mansfield. O. Frozen water pipes caused a fatal explosion in the kitchen of the female department of the Home for the Friendless. Martha Boliskey, aged 7 years, was instantly killed. Florence Reifsnyder, aged 10 years, was so badly burned that she di?d in a few hours after being removed to the hospital. Mary Welsh, a cook, was seriously burned, but probably will recover. CRIME. Toledo, O. Isaias Miller, a patient at the Toledo hospital for the insane, is dead as the result of his attack on an attendant of the name of Bodcn. St. Louis, Mo. Boiler Inspector Price, whose office has been under investigation by the senate Lexow committee, admitted that he had made hange in the records of his office and also the issuance of between fifty and sixty engineer's licenses from his office of which there was no record. Macon, Ga. Private James Ellis, company 1, North Carolina volunteer infantry, found guilty of murder by a general court-martial, was sentenced to be dishonorably discharged from the service of the United States and conlined for the period of his natural life. Cincinnati. Ohio. Charles C. Moore, publisher of a paper in Lexington. Ky.. convicted by a jury in the United States court on a charge of sending an obscene publication through the mails, was sentenced by Judge Thompson to serve two years in the penitentiary. West Superior. Wis. Patrolman Segwickey shot and possibly fatally injured Thomas Lyons, a laborer. Cleveland, Ohio. Judge Frank K. Dellenbnugh was a witness in his own behalf in the disbarment proceedings against him. and entered a vigorous denial to all the charges hanging over him. Philadelphia. Pa. The Supreme court affirmed the decision in the case of Anthony McGowan of Alleghany county, convicted of murdering his wife. Los Angeles. Cal. A. G. Branley. the old soldier who shot Gov. Smith of the Soldiers' Home at Santa Monica, was sentenced to twa years in San Quentin prison.

It is acknowledged to be the best melodrama ever brought ever from England and every report concurs in saying that it is certainly the most magnificent production cf a play ever made in this country. Two hundred people are u.-:cd in the course cf the production. The hero is a young English nobleman, the Earl of Woodstock. His passion for racing has brought him to the verge of bankrupiey and only the victory of his great mare Lady Love in the historic Derby can s-ave him. Lady Love finally runs the tace and wins it in a most impressive fashion, but the spectators have been through three hours of hairbreadth escapes, tremendously stirring events and thrilling complications. New Haven. Conn. John Pease Norton, a Yale University senior hailing from Los Angeles, was awarded the Yale Courant medal for presenting the best literary thesis. Shippensburg, Pa. Dr. Robert Slewart was found dead in his room, having been asphyxiated by illuminating gas. Two dogs in the room wore also found dead. Chicago. Otto H. Hasselman. doing business as the Journal Job Printing Company, assigned to I). M. Hansdall as trustee. The Journal Company owes $11,000; debts of the Hasselman Company are larger. The assets of each company arc between $l.r,000 and $20,000. Havana. About COO wreaths and floral emblems from individuals and societies have been piled at the foot cf the bier of Gen. Calixto Garcia, whose body arrived from the United States on the United States gunboat Nashvilie. Ottawa, Ont. Archibald Lamnman. the poet, died here of pneumonia. Mr. Lampman had been a contributor to the leading American and English magazines for many years. San Antonio. Tex. Mme. Candc'aria. the only survivor of the Alamo massacre, and one of the most historical persons in the country, is dead. Galesburg, 111. The will of the late Royal Hammond, filed for probate, leaves $2,000 to Wbeaton college, to be used by the trustees in lighting secret societies and the liquor traffic. Peoria. 111. The Peoria Cordage company has decided to double its present capacity, and is erecting buildings which will enable it to work C00 hands. Cleveland. Ohio The report that the Carnegie Steel company had purchased the railway and vessel interests of John D. Rockefeller on the great lakes and that Mr. Rockefeller would retire entirely from the lake business is positively denied. Charleston. S. C The United States cruiser Marblehead left the navy yard for Havana. Washington The United States transport Grant, which sailed from New York Jan. 10, bound for Manila, passed Algiers. Helen. N. M. Inhabitants are much alarmed on account of a series of earthquake shocks that have occurred here recently. Many have betaken
themselves to prayers and fasting. Toledo. Ohio E. W. Koch of Sandusky, Ohio, has filed a petition of voluntary bankruptcy, showing liabilities amounting to $130.000 and assets less than $40,000. He is in the lumbering business. Seattle. Wash. The riches: gold strike made for months is imported from McDonald Creek. Northwest Territory. Surface gravel gave from $1 to $2 a pan. 0 Week's Proceedings in the House and Senate. COUNTRY SHORT OF MONEY. Chairman Cannon Sounds a Warning Against Extravagance Debate on Sundry Civil Appropriation Kill Is Cont inuetl. YVduesdav. Feb. 8. By filibustering tactics a few members held up seventy bills for public buildings in various parts of the country, including six in Illinois. The bill providing for a new public building at Newport News was passed, and that was the only one out of a list of about seventy that succeeded in getting through. In the senate the Indian appropriation bill, which has been pending for several weeks, was completed and passed. The legislative, executive and judicial appropriation bill was taken up, but after twenty-four pages of it had been disposed of it was laid aside for the day. A bill providing for the holding of two terms each year of the United States circuit and district courts at Hammond, Ind., was passed. Thursday, Feb. 9. In the house Chairman Cannon of the appropriations committee, in the course of the general debate on the sundry civil bill, sounded a note of warning against extravagant appropriations, and practically served notice that neither the ship subsidy bill nor the Nicaragua canal bill could be passed at this session. Throughout its open session the senate had under consideration the legislative, executive and judicial appropriation bill. New York, were practically burned out. The damage will exceed $1.000.000. Varnish Companies to Consolidate. The United States Varnish Company is being organized under the laws of New Jersey, with a capital of $18.000.000 preferred and $18,000,000 common stock. Court of Inqnlry Ordered. Secretary Alger, by direction of the president, appointed a board of inquiry to make a full investigation of the entire beef scandal. Porter Goes to England, Robert P. Porter has sailed for England. He is said to have been intrusted with another mission by President McKinley. Court Martial for Cervera. After disposing of seventy-one of the 127 pages of the bill it was laid aside for the day, and the me.-srge from the president urging the establishment of a Pacific cable line was laid before the senate. The senate, at 3: SO o'clor-k. went into executive session, and afterward adjourned. The entire session of the bouse was occupied in general debate on the sundry civil appropriation bill. It contained nothing particularly new or important. Wednesday, the 22d inst.. was set apart for the delivery of eulogies upon the late Senator Morrill of Vermont. COSTLY BOOKS BURNED. Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars' worth of bocks and stationery were destroyed by a fire which originated from an explosion of gas in the building occupied by A. C. McClurg Sc Co.. at Chicago. The repatriation of the Spanish troops in the Philippines is now being prosecuted with energy.
