Speaking Clocks, "We speak of watches and clocks as telling the time, but v.c do not as a rule expect to be understood as saying that they do it in so many words. Xow, however, we may make mention of clocks that literally tell the hour. These phonograph clock. are being made in Switzerland, and are the very latest thing in the line of timepieces. When a button is pressed they pronounce the hour distinctly, thus saving the owner the trouble of looking for himself to see where the hands point. The new invention has been utilized to awaken a sleeper in altogether a more natural manner than by the old system. A clock set to awaken its owner at six, calls out to the slumberer: "It is six o'clock .get up'." Fome clocks, evidently intended for the tise of obstinate sleepers, add: "Now don't go to sleep again!" The form of warning can be chosen by the buyer, and may be more or less emphatic. The application of the phonographic principle to watches and clocks is the work of a French watchmaker settled at Geneva. He introduced into the timepieces little slabs of vulcanized rubber, on which the desired words are traced in grooves corresponding to the hours and fraction of hours.

A STARTLING DISCOVERY. How Nikola Tela "Will Transmit Power Through Air. As civilization advances and our needs multiply, the demands on the toilers in the various departments of science constantly increase, and naturally the activity in the direction of providing new resources becomes more and more intense. Hut the severest burden is undoubtedly on the engineer, mechanic or inventor, whoso task it iä to produce motive power. The problem o providing economical power has ever taxed tho inventive mind, and with the introduction of electricity a great stride in advance ha Leen effected. 3V.it still, many limitations were encountered in the difficulties of ci'iciontly transmitting the energy of great t-ources of power, which exi.-L i: abundance in Nature, to remote places of utilization. Here it is that Nikola Tc.-da. did his first great work by ui.-rovcrir.e; tbe rotating magnetic liid and applying it to a practical syMcm of electric power transmission, now u.-ed in all parts of the world. A: we were then, i now we are privileged to record another forward si.p. which if successful on a large soak, will prow of astounding censequence. for it will open up unlimited resources o practically costless power. Te.-Ia now proposes to transmit, without the use of any wires, through the natural media the earth and the air great amounts of power to distances of thousands of miles. This will appear a dream a tale from the Arabian Nights. Hut tho extraordinary discoveries Tcsla. has made during a number of years of incessant labcr make it evident that his work in this fiebi ha- passed tho stage of mere laboratory experiment and is ready for a practical test on an industrial s. ab The success of his efforts means that power from sueli sources as Niagara will become available in any part of the "world, regardless of di.-ta:ic Klectrical Review.
Reürs of Vrlnec Cliarllp. An intere.-ting little collection of relics of Prince Charlie.including three J beautiful waistcoat, were recently offered for sali in Aberdeen, Scotland. They were tbe property of tho late I Don Carlos Pedro Gordon, of Wardhouse, who.-c silver plate came te the hammer at th" same time. The waist coats were worked by Mr. Gordon's ! great-grandmother, the daughter of ! Count Strasbourg. Mrs. Gordon was a violent Jacobite, and during- the residence of Prince Charlie at Holy rood in 1745 she made three vests. Two of them are yellow silk; tho other is crimson, richly embroidered with. gold. Among the other relics advertised are two gold riugs. with miniatures of Charles I. and Charles II. They were given by the old chevalier to Mrs. Gordon's stepfather, the famous Jacobite, Alexander Gordon, who spent his youth in th Russian army, and wroto a life of Peter the Great. There is also a letter written by Prince Charlie. There is no doubt about the genuineness of the relics, which vs'ere once lent to the queen, who ha3 a fine collection of Jacob i to mementoes.
