CASUALTIES. Marion, Ind. Miss May Cloud. In years old, died at the city hospital from the effects of burns caused by a gas explosion. Kingston, Jamaica The steamer Andes of the Atlas Line went ashore and will probably be a total loss. Sycamore, 111. The new M. E. church at Hurlington Center that has been built but two years was burned. The loss is about $S.000. Concord. Mass., Dec. 21. Col. EdWard S. Harrett national president of the Sons of the American Revolution, was killed by falling from a window of his home today. He was about CO years of age. Liverpool An irtermaritime conference has been arranged to meet in Ixmdon in June next to discuss collisions at sea. Delegates will be sent by Hritish, American, French, and German steamship companies.

London-Chinese rebels are said to have massacred a French priest and 100 converts in the town of ChungYang in Hoo-Pe province. Athens-- Prince (Jeorge of Greece, whose tenure of office as commissioner general of the European powers in Ciete began Sunday, started for Canea, after attending a Te Deum. He left Athens amid a popular ovation. Munich - A duel with pistols took place here between Major Seltz and Lieutenant Pfeiffer, arising out of the former's relations with Pfeiffer's wife, Major Seltz was killed. Leipsic Theodore Heine, the artist who caricatured Emperor William's trip to the Holy Land, has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for so doing. CRIME. Pocomoke City. Md. John E. Turnet, colored, was taken from his home by two unknown men and murdered. Milwaukee. Wis. --Henry Hess pleaded guilty to a charge- of arson and was sentenced to six years in the state prison at Waupun. Detroit, Mich. John A. Severn, superintendent of the I). M. Ferry Seed company, committed suicide. He was in ill health. San Juan, Porto Ilico Private Joseph C. Quill. Eleventh Pnited States infantry, died of a gunshot wound, piesumably self-inflicted. Williamsburg. N. Y. Revenue officers seized the plant of the llower-Ur-ban Hrewing company for an alleged falsification of reports on the output of the plant. San Francisco J. P. Dunning was the principal witness in the trial of Mrs. Rotkin. He was released from jail, where he bad been confined for contempt, the prosecuting attorney having withdrawn the question Dunning refused to answer. Dunning said he believed Mrs. Rotkin killed his wife. Warsaw, Ind. J. A. Madlein, a contractor from Goshen, was held up at Mishawaka and robbed of $.100. Roston A jury convicted W. S. Jewett. formerly president of the Lake National bank of Wolfboro. N. IL, of the embezzlement of $25,000. Atchison. III. Rurglars broke into the National bank. The amount of their booty has not yet been revealed by the bunk's officials. Wabash. Intl.--Deputy Sheriff Covington of this place has succeeded in capturing .lames Ward and Charles Hunt, who escaped from the Carroll county jail at Delphi la.-t Friday. North Craudon, Wis. Milt Stoliker was shot and killed by bis cousin, Joseph Stolikes. The trouble was caused by Joseph Stoliker paying attentions to Milt Sloliker's sister, Mrs. Deisel. The murderer Is in jail. Oquawka, 111. Miss Kate Logan was hot and probably fatally wounded by R. G. Jenkins of Vermont. 111., whom she had rejected. Jenkins then trie.1 to kill himself, but failed.

Chaffee departed for Tampa, Fla., whence he will sail on Saturday for Havana to take up his duties as chief of staff under General Rrooke, military governor of Cuba. Washington The postmaster general announces the appointment of Major E. G. Rathbone, of Ohio, exfourth assistant postmaster general, to take charge of and conduct the postal service in Cuba, with the title of director of posts. St. Augustine. Fla. There is every evidence in the war department that strenuous efforts are making to put enough American troops in Cuba to meet any call upon them through the speedy evacuation of the Spanish garrisons. All the transports available at Atlantic ports are being prepared under rush orders for sailing south. The Spanish are carrying out their evacuation contrac t with unusual celerity and there is some question whether American troops can be concentrated at certain points before the Spaniards leave. MAINE'S CAPTAIN GOES BACK TO HAVANA.

Capt. Charles I). Sigsbee, who was in fommand of the battleship Maine when Bhe was destroyed in Havana last February, has entered that port again in command of a battleship, the Texas, for demonstrations during evacuation week and it is thought very desirable to have an adequate force on hand to prevent any outbreak that would jeopardize the American entente at the outset. Three Thons md Chinese Killed. A powder magazine situated in the center of the Chinese camp at HangChow exploded, leveling a square mile of houses. It is estimated that 3.000 eoldiers were killed, including the general commanding the forces. For llryan and Silver. United States Senator J. K. Jones jf Arkansas says William Jennings Hryan of Nebraska will be the democratic presidential nominee in 1900, and free silver will be the dominant issue in the platform. Inspect Ouarrel Over Tariffs. The Herlin correspondent of the London Daily News says: "If symptoms are not deceptive new tariff controversies are imminent between the United States and Germany. Smith Will Not Kmi. Congressman William Alden Smith, whom Gov. Pingree invited to enter the senatorial race against Harrows of Michigan, has come to the conclusion not to go in. Fatal Ilear F.nd Collision. A rear-end collision occurred on the Pennsylvania railroad three miles from Rah way, N. J., which resulted in the loss of two lives and severe injuries to seven others. Altgeld for Municipal Ownership. The municipal ownership and Chicago platform party has been born. ExGov. Altgeld will run for mayor of Chicago on its platform. Illinois Man for Ambassador Senator Cullom is said to be working in the interest of an Illinoisan who is ambitious to become ambassador to the Court of St. James. Carlos Ciot No Money. The report that Don Carlos has contracted a loan in England is denied. It is explained that he tried to do so, but failed. Torrens Land Law Cpheld. The Torrens land transfer law is to stay. The Illinois supreme court has refused to grant a rehearing in the case. Hitchcock to He Secretary. The president has nominated Ethan A. Hitchcock of Missouri to be secretary of the interior.

The Louisiana Centennial. It has been decided to give an exposition in St. Louis, in 1903, in commemoration of the centennial of the Louisiana purchase. This action was taken mainly on the advice of Director General Davis, of the Chicago Columbian Exposition, who explained that the Chicago enterprise had done more for the west than any single affair in the history of this country.
