Montreal At a banquet Lord Herschell, chairman of the international commission, said the proceedings of the conference had shown him the difficulties between the Cnited States and Canada wer of a minor character, and he did not see why they should not be easily adjusted. Washington- Officials of the navy department are in favor of adopting the English system of transportation nf soldiers by sea. The principal feaure is that officers of the navy are to be in control of the military on shipboard, thus preventing any possible clash between the two branches of the service. Ferguson of the elevator at Annawan was pushing a carload of grain on the railroad tracks his 6-year-old son was caught under the wheels and instantly killed. Mishawaka. Inci. Henry Schnur, proprietor of the Pleasant Yalley fruit orchards, was found dead by Grand Trunk section men near the railroad tracks. North W eymou'h. Mass. The factory buildings of the Bradley Fertilizing Works, burned, causing a loss of $L'00.000 on the buildings and stock, practically covered by insurance. Shadeland. Ind. A freight engine on the Wabash exploded near here. Engineer John Johnson, married and living at Lafayette, and Edward Regan, fireman, single, were oaught beneath the wreck. Johnson died as the train reached Lafayette. Regan's recovery is doubtful. Milwaukee. Wis. Mrs. Rose Sanger and her 12-year-old daughter were asphyxiated by illuminating gas while they siept. Wisconsin, a city of 1.500 people, causing a property loss estimated at $225.000. About twenty-five lainilies are homeless Five childrt-n are reported burned o death. A large saw mill is among the buildings burned, throwing many out of employment. Rain saved the entire city from Joeing burned. .Almena, a town of 300, and Paskin. a town of 2c0. both on the "Soo" line, this county, have been wiped out. Clayton, of 300 people is gone, and a large portion of Clear Lake, 000 inhabitants, was destroyed. Thousands of feet of hardwood timber surrounding the town of Glenwood were destroyed. Forty-eight farm houses between Glenwood and Chippewa Falls were destroyed, including thousands of dollars worth of stock, grain and machinery. August Peterson, living near Estella- suffered tne lss of his house, barn. stock and farm machinery, with no insurance. Crazed by his loss, he rushed into the burning forest, but was dragged out by his eldest son after both were terribly burned.
