The religion that makes people pay their debts; the religion that makes no distinction between wealth and poverty; the religion that makes people honest and upright; the religion that makes men manly and women womanly ; the religion that is a part of people's every day life, exemplified in kind deeds, lo mg acts, cheering words, is the religiou that is needed in the world to dav. (ii cat excitement now prevails at Washington and throughout the country. The report of the Maine commission has been received by the President, and is now being considered by his advisors. It is evident that the report will show that the destruction of the war vessel was caused hy outside agencies. Active war prepar itions are being made and it is like Iv that hostilities can not be averted The war telegrams in the daily p. pers seem to be only a repetition of what has been long expected in regard to the proximity of the warThe news varies from the sensation el telegram that we are on the verge of war to the conservative statement that peace is likely to be maintained The snspence is becoming very irksome to the jingoes. Deputy assessors will be required to give bond this year before beginning their duties the first time in the history of the state. This is on account of the dog tax, which haste be paid to the assessors in cash. Real estate will not be assessed this year although improvements will be taken. Real estate assessment is not made until 1890. While John Rull is professing sympathy for us In London he is steadily enchroaching on American territory in Alaska. Our commander up there appears afraid to act without orders. Why does not the Government send ome one and authorize him to drive the Canadians back to their own side of the line. The Presdient has not as yet given out any statement as regards the Msine report, and will no, until next week. Of course it is generally known that the commission holds that the ship was destroyed by outside agencies. The bulging of the mail sacks these days is caused by the marked copies of the Congressional Record en route to the dear voters. A Philadelphia alderman declared that he refused $5.000 for his vote on the water ordinance. He didn't name the figure at which he finally closed . John Wanauiaker's leg will not be permitted to go sleep during the Pennsylvania campaign. The Kentucky girl who gives a kiss with each book she sells doesn't insure her patrons against microbes. War seems inevitable unless .Spain withdraws her army from Cuba.
The Regular Auuy
In th 1 artr rit IM rprrnits :ire r iff - - 1 I ering themselves for the new artill-1 ery regiments in large numbers and the same is true of the Navy. The regular army service is vastly different from what it was formerly. The men have the very best of food, superior clothing, good treatment from their orlicers and what is better than all excellent educational facilities. Every regiment in barracks Ikis ;i tine school, and as the term of enlistment is for three years onlv, the voung man can come out with nearly every penny of bis money and a tine education. In fact, it is a great school in itself and learns the young man the need of discipline by obedience to orders; and at the same time he is taught to assume the position and the posture of I full grown man erect, full-chested, etc. The recent decision of the supreme court declaring! the indeterminate sentence law constitutional, will necessitate another transfer cf prisoners between the Michigan City and J effersonville institutions. All under 30 years of age who have lieen sentenced since the passage of the law will be taken to the Jefferson - ville reformatory, and all over 30 years to the prison at the former place. Hereafter judges of the courtover the state will conform strictly to the law in sentencing prisoners. What an awful strain there must be at this time on President McKinley. The situation is siieli as to 1 equire the utmost care in pawing upon mutters of momentioiis importance. The slightest mistake might result in serious complications- Every point pertaining to the case now uppermost in the public mind must be carefully considered from every conceivable standpoint before final decision irendered. Verily the otlice of president of the United States is one of tremendous responsibility, under ex isting circumstances Evangelist Moody is dow n on the the regular, habitual staid church goer and church member. I le wants more activity, more work, more enthusiasm, more breaking away from old forms, more good Samaritanisni, more love, more humanity in the congregation. It makes little difference he says, who is in the pulpit even Gabriel himself as lone :s the ews are full of crabs. A good councilman is of greater importance to the people of a c it than amcmber of the legislature or of congress. Councilmen pass oil mcas ures directly affecting your homes. They pass ordinances calling for large and small appropriations of the puhlic funds. Why not see to it that none hut men capable of doing tlu-t things intelligently are nominated for councilmen? Michigan Central l)etectie Win. Stark, operating on the Joliet ami Western division, with headquarters in, Chicago vva seriouly, and perhaps fatally, shot hy one of three robben whom he w as attempting to arrest. The affair occurred about 10 o' clock Thursday nigh at Farncsaville, a station located about 8 miles west of Michigan City. Everybody should echo the sent -ment of Senator Thurston. In his great speech yesterday in the senate speaking of Spain, he laid . "Europe I may tolerate her existence as long as the people of the Old World wish.. God grant that before another Christmas morning the last restige of Spanish tyranny and oppression will have vanished from the western hemisphere." The House of Representatives gave another evidence of the wave of patriotic fervor which is sweeping over the country. A generous hill for the relief of the Maine survivors and the dependent families of the victims was passed unanimously. Now let us see the House pass resolutions recognizing Cuban independence with like unanimity, and that will be a new tribute to the memories of those who died in the Havana massacre
TO .1 .1 r . , r . - is tne moiner oi ine imam King, i ., daughter o! Austria, and the Em p0reI cf Austria naturally feels a very great solicitude in the Spanish side of the controversy between that conn try and the United States, and it is among the possibilities that we will have to right Austria ;is well as Spam. The Austrian navy is a mere nothing and so far as land troops are c oncerned, if they ship evety one of their soldiers over to the United States from both Spain and Austria tht will find enough of the boys in blue to do them to a brown turn. The House Committee on Invalid Pension- has favorably reported the Over street bill prohibiting the withholding, suspension, modification, or cancellation of any pension except for fraud, clerical errot, mistake of fact or recovery from disability. The bill requires sworn charges in euch case, the reduction of all evidence to written questions and answers and prevents adverse action until t!.e determination of such an invesngaion, to be held near the claimant's home at w hich the claimant and attorney are to appear. Kichard Croker tias heard Iroin t lie Democrats ot the Kmpirs state, outside of the great metropolis, and now volunteers the statment that there is not likely to be any trouble between himself and David Ii. Hill. The Tammany lea der has made the discovery the David B, ha? a great big following throughout the state and that he is master of t lie situation. Hence the tiger's claws are not as conspicuously displayed as was the case some time ago. There seems to be a sliarp rivalry be tween the Chicago Thbnne and The (.'hie ago Cbroniele as to whieh Of these papers cau publish the most ml about the impending conflict with Spain . ol Omul Of rubbish have been published in these papers that any well-balanced newspaper man would have contemptuonsly pitched into the waste basket. If there is any conscience left In the editor ial sanctum of these metropolitan journals, the managers will yet have occa sion to deprecate their rashness and folly. it is thought that the Administration will be compelled to issue bonds for from SSDOüOOQjOOO to üOOyOOOyOOO in order to obtain ready cash on hand until the benelits from the extraordinary tax is felt in the Treasury, and Congress, it is said, will sanction the issuance of the bonds as treely as it appropriated Sö 000.000 from the Treasury recently. The b inds would be snapped up by the people very quickly. Frog catching is quite an industry along the Kankakee and YHlow rivers just at present. Five hundred dozen six thousand frogs vrbere shipped on the Mickel Plate 0 Chicago yesterday, one hundred twenty three dozen of whieh were caught that day hy two men. They are tne small grass frogs, and bring about twenty cents per doen before shipping, says the Kooi Democrat. If Senator Hanns doesn't know anything about the big bond deal now on the tapis, he should mix with the enterprising correspondents who ate arranging it and et informed. The Pennsylvania counties in winch Brother Wanamaker pleached reform have returned large Quaj majorities. It looks as if Pennsy lvania is too much of a sinner for John. It is not believed that the people up in Tom Reed's district will become so warlike as to hire a new man to represent them in Congres If that Spanish editor should stick a BWOrd into Hon. Billy Masons innards ttir damage would be far reaching An extra session of the Illinois Legislature would be necessary The persistaucy of the men makes widowhood in the Kiondyke up-hill business.
