No tongue, no pen can add to the awful pathos of this dying message of a white siave girl overwhelmed with anxiety and hunger as she fell by her own hand in New York City. A pleading innovation is to be introduced in the christening of the new battleship "Kentucky." Instead of breaking the time honored bottle of wine upon the vessel's bow, Miss Bradley, the governor's daughter, who is to do the christening act, will spill from a silver vessel pure, sparkljn spring water procured from the Kentucky farm upon which Abraham Lincoln was born. It is a pretty and a pleasing change from the conventional custom. It has been yeais since patent medi eines could be purchased so cheap in Plymouth ap they are now sold at the Peoples drug store on Laporte street. Our readers will do well to call and purchase anything they may need in the drue line at this store. Pinkhams Compound 78 cents. II. . Thayer, delivered an ad dress in the M. K. church in Peru Saturday night to a crowded house. From what we have been able to learn the address of our fellow townsman was well received and highly spoken of by the press of that hustling city. While m that city, Mr. Thayer was the guest of Mr. and Mrs O. C. Miller. Mr. Miller is pioprittor of one of the largest and finest dry good stores in Indiana. iia s..tpdi'p- A UJ....J

But lew farmers came to town to day. The Hook and Ladder company held a busiuess session last night. Sol Mayer, of Spokane, is visiting relatives in this city. The ground hog saw his shadow in Marshall county today. A lively political debate took place in the post othce today. The Starke county witnesses have returned to their homes. This morning proved a genuine old time winter morning, blizzard and all. Weather: Fair tonight and Thursday. Colder Thursday night. Over at Muncie tbe entire police force attended church in a body Sunday evening. Measles have broken out in school district No 2 and out of 3H scholars only five are able to attend. There will be about six Plymouth citizens who will start for the Klondike in March. Just keep quiet. It will only be a few hours until the verdict will be known. The Kastern Star lodge held a very pleasant meeting last night in Masonic lodge room. A party of thirty young folks drove to the residence of S. Kiser's last night and enjoyed a tine oyßter supper. Harvey Moore, of Kichmond was a visitor in Pi mouth today and listened to the arguments in the Sutherlin case. The property stolen at Ktna Green a few days ago has heen recovered. The bloodhounds were all right in this ca6e. A bet of 10 to 5 w ts made today that the verdict in theSutherun case would be more severe than in tbe former trial. If Sutherlin is guilty, they say that he is awful guilty, and ought to have the full benefit of the lawrope and all. During the Sutherlin trial the Inde pendent has given all the evidence without comment. When it came to

said some things which probably did not meet with a hearty reception from a certain class. le that as it may we feel confident that the Independent has met the approbation of the community in the frank and fearless manner in which this case has been reported. If (iov. Mount succeeds in discovering and bringing to the bar of justice the men guilty of the llilley county lynching outrage of last summer he will have accomplished a good deal even if he does not secure their conviction iu the courts. They stand convicted already by public opinion and if their identity is revealedthey;wil! ever after carry the brand of Cain upon their brows. Let no man get it into his head that because he is a candidate he is either in or "out of politics." The running for otlice is only an incident of politics. It is the steady going voter the man who believes in his party and its principles who shows his loyalty by talking for his principles whether a campaign is on or not and who never fails to beat the polls, lie is tbe man who is in politics sud not the man who after a debate in the convention announces himself "out of politics" when he was never in save for place and pell. Uelt w we publish the names ol those preterit at the surprise on Kichard See: Wm. l'omroy and wife, Smith Fomroy and wife, Miles Fomroy and wile, Mr and Mrs. Vanvactor, Upton Vanvaetoi and wife, Hubert Vanvactor and wife, Miles Vanvactor and wife, Lou Stephenson and wife, George Macklin and wife, Jesse McKneely and family, Bert Williams, Mrs. Otto Carlile, L. Fülle: Sidney lireen and Mrs. Kd Campbell. Dr. B. L. Kivenburg, of Chicago, who bus been at the lioss House for the past week, has successfully treated Lotta J osey, son of Mr. Losey the jeweler, who has been atllicted with stammering for a number of years. The doctor has now under treatment, Mr. Hiram (joodwin, of Lapaz, who has been known as one of the worst stammerers in the country. He has made great improvement with one day's treatment and expects to be entirely cured within a few days. The doctor has hundreds of indorsements from the best men in the country. Any one afllicted with au impediment in speech should not fail to see the doctor, while he is in the city. The Kev. Sam Small has come and gone and it remains to be seen what has been accomplished by his work in this city. Like most men he is far from perfect. He is intensely radical in his views and allows no oue to criticise his utterances without answering them in lis own peculiar style. His reference to a minister in a neighboring town in which he compared him to a monkey is an example to the kind of reply he is capable of making. Holding up to ridicule the weaknesses of church members for the edification of outsiders is regarded by many men as a serious error of judgment. In their efforts to live up to the Christian standard professors of religion need words of encouragement in place of ridicule and scorn. They are not allhypocritsby any means neither are they ail perfect. The question is, can you drive men easier than you can lead them to paths of righte ousnessV Columbia City Fost.
