Kuhn returns to Chicago this evening where he will resume his duties in the medical department at the Marine Hospital. John Miller, night agent, at the Pittsburg depot, leaves to-morrow on a two week's vacation, during which time he will-visit Cleveland and Pittsburg. J, H. Cooky has rented tho room formerly occupied by the Model and is preparing to open it with a stock of dry goods, clothing, boots and shocr. Nathaniel Clark was lined 69.75 by Justice Peeves to-day on the charge of provoke. Miss Protsman who has been in attendance at Valparaiso school returned yesterday. A. J. Dillon, the popular insurance man of Pochester, was on our streets yesterday. Mrs. Harry Armstrong and Mrs. C. O. Smith, returned from Ft. "Wayne last evening. Miss Louisa Pall left for Columbia City to-day, where she will visit friends for two weeks. Miss Lizzie Wiltfcng of Huntington, is visiting the Misses Lottie and Cora Leonard for a few days. The family of L. C. Aures arrived in this city this morning and will make this their future home. Hon. II. G. Thayer is in South Pend to-day in attendance at the funeral of the late G. W. Matthews. Mrs. Mary Dinklage who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. J. P. Ilanes, returned to Ft. Wayne to-day. Mrs. Prindie Whitmore of Valparaiso is the guest of P. C. Southworth "and family for about a week. The funeral of Mrs. Poss Smith will take place at the Donaldson Church at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. W. II. Corbaley, an attorney of Indianapolis, is spending a few days here with his nephew, John A Corbaley. Vern Nussbaum and Editor Nearpass of Marmont, attended the ball game at the fair grounds yesterday. Fitch Peeves has accepted a position with the Indiana Novelty Manufacturing Co. and commenced on his duties. Owing to the remodeling in the Sears building A. E. Wise has removed his office to the forward part of the building. Will Siders has accepted a position as stenographer in a law ollice at Des Mo'mts, la., and left for that place yesterday. Mrs. Jeveny S: Son of Chicago, are guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John McCall, in this city. Mr. Jeveny is the famous umpire of the National League. Prosecuting Attorney Houghton assisted by Sam Parker are at Inwood today trying the case of the State of Indiana vs. Davidson, for violation of the Sunday law. Mr. and Miss Craig of Shelby county, are here visiting their uncle, George Craig, and will remain over Sunday. They are on their way home from school at Valparoiso. The Pev. Paymond will depart Mon day for a visit to his old homestead in New York slate. He will meet Mrs. Paymond who is already there, and after two or three weeks sojourn they will return together and be at home again. Miss Tillio Wade was taken by surprise by about twenty-five of her friends last evening but soon recovered herself and entertained them royally. A most enjoyable evening was spent with cards and games after which ice cream and cake were served. A fpaiet wedding took place last evening at the residence of Mrs. S. A Chaplin 702 North Michigan street. The contracting parties were Mr. Jonas C. Miller, of Oltowa, Kas., and Mrs. Pachel Tabar a highly respected lady of this city. Kldcr John C. Lee Kendall returned from Terre Haute last night. Geo. Vinal and wife were the guests of South Pend friends yesterday. Sherman, of Lake Maxenkuckee was trading in Plymouth to-day. Miss Mary Wade went to Columbia City last evening to attend the wedding of a cousin. Jacob Wade leaves for Columbia City to morrow morning to attend the wedding of a relative. Chas. Humphrey is expected home to-day after a two weeks to visit various places in the east. Mrs. Jane Cross is reported as having been very sick Saturday and Sunday. She is a little better to-day. Miss May Prough, who has been the guest of Mrs. Amanda Croup returned to Michigan City to-night.
Misses Sazie and Mary McMasters leave for Elgin, 111., Wednesday, where they will make their future home. George Searls, who is working at the carpenter trade at Montpelier, spent Sunday with his wife in this city. Mrs. Alfred Morrison returned to Ilobart Saturday evening after a visit with friends and relatives in this city John Maley was lined 9.53 by Justice Peeves this morning, on the charge of drunkenness, and went to jail in default. Mr. and Mrs. James Orr of Fort Wayne, spent Sunday with Mrs. Orr's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J A. Palmer, in this city. Grandma Smalley went to LaPorte Saturday evening where she will make her future home with her son, M. 1). Smalley. The Holiness people are busy predicting the end of the world. They ought to wait at least until the weather gets cooler Miss Elzina Stuck is visiting her parents at Marmont this week before going to LaPorte, where she will make her future home. Miss Prenda Whitmore of Valpar aiso, who has been visiting friends in this place, went to South Pend this morning to yisit her parents. Harry Hoham, who has been very low for some time past with malarial fever, is convalescent under the able care of Dr. Powers, and is rapidly approaching recovery, Monroe Walters took a bicycle trip to Chicago yesterday. He left his home here at 3 o'clock yesterday morning and expected to be in Chicago at 1 p. m. The Independent will give the time as soon as Walter is heard from. The Ladies of the Maccabees will give an entertainment consisting of songs and recitations on August 2Sth, at the K. O. T. M. Hall. An admission of ten cents will be charged at the door, this including ice cream and cake. Wednesday's Daily J. E. Snyder and family, Miss Eva Snyder and Frank Peeve, spent Sunday at Pretty Lake. J. E. took an involuntary bath in apout eight feet of water, going over the horses head while showing Frank how to make a horse drink out of the lake when he is afraid of the waves. Joseph M. Herman and Miss Mary Ashton were married at St. Michaels church by the Pev. Father Moench at nine o'clock this morning. The bride is one of Plymouth's fairest daughters and the groom a prominent business man of Marmont. The Ixdkpkxdkxt joins with their many friends in wishing them future success and happiness in their venture upon matrimonial life. The Casad Minstrel Company gave its initial performance in the opera house Saturday night. Most local show goers wished to see this first performance and a good audience greeted the
company when tho show 4egan but there was quite an exodus of people before it was over, which was possibly owing to the hot weather. Opinions diifer as to the merits of the entertainment, but we believe those who stayed to the end were generally satisfied. Otis Koebert was driving on Washington street Saturday evening near Center when his horse stumbled and fell breaking. one of the thills to the buggy and also breaking tho harness in several places. A great deal of gravel has been dumped on the street at this point and evidently not much pains taken to spread it. It was this that caused the horse to stumble. It would feem as though when such -repairs are being made on the street surely some kind of a light should bo provided to warn approaching teams of the danger. From Tuesday's Daily. The work of repairing, cleaning and painting the Michigan street bridge was commenced to-day. Dr. Wiseman, of Marmont, was in the city yesterday and reports business in his line as a little dull at that place Mrs. Pell Patterson and sister, Mrs. Calista Tippie of Defiance, Ohio, were visiting their cousin, Mrs. Wm. H. Craig last week. Miss Emma Montgomery left for Spokane, Washington, this morning to remain a year. She was accompanied to Chicago by Mrs. J. W. Hess, who will return this evening. Chas. Miss Lizzie Hensey, who has been the guest of Miss Clara Pucher, was recalled to her home in Ft. Wayne last evening by a telegram announcing the serious illness of her father. Miss Lena Schoner left to-day for Twin Lake, where she Will be the guest of Mrs. C. Coddard for a few days, when they will go in company to Lake Maxenkucke to visit friends. Mrs. Frank Nicolay and sister, Mrs. Pichards returned from Chicago yesterday. They were accompanied home by their niece Miss Pertha Snyder who who will visit here for about ten days. A party of young ladies composed of Misses Louis Ayres, Erma Wirlings, Erna Eiler, Daisy Powell, Daisy Nussbaum, Planche Wolf and Lillie Knob lock picniced at the park near the large llowing well yesterday. A party of travelers by team passed through the city yesterday enroute from northwestern Nebraska to eastern Pennsylvania. They report everthing along the route so far as having suffered greatly from drought. A delightful musicale was given at the residence of J. W. Iless last evening by Prof. Worbes, of Spokane, Washington. Among those present were Mesdames Purket, Tibbetts and Lauer, Miss Julia Mayer, and Messrs C. P. Tibbetts and Edwin Mayer. Jacob Michaels house near the Yandalia depot was entered during the early part of last night while the family were absent and a new suit of clothes belonging to Mr. Michaels was stolen. An old pair of pants with 52 in the pocket was overlooked. The Young Ladies' society, of the Presbyterian church, gave a hay ride party last evening to the Christian Endeavor of that church. They visited the family of Mr. Howe on Prewery road, where they were entertained in a delightful manner and returned at a late hour feeling that they had all enjoyed an evening of unalloyed pleasure. Houghton prosecuted the case and V. P. Kirk appeared for the defense. The defendant was found guilty and a fine of $10.00 imposed. He was standing on a sea If old tearing down a brick wall with a crowbar, when the scaffold fell with him to the floor below. The crowbar fell also the blunt end striking him on the head indicting a severe bruise and breaking the skin for over an inch. He was compelled to go home but is out again to-day. Township Trustee MiCrory has purchased a i acre gravel pit of Hiram Shafcr, IP , miles south of the city on Michigan road and will use it in improving the roadsof that locality. It is said that this pit contains some of tho best gravel that ever "laid out doors.
