at Kingston, N. V , seems to be one of the latest organizitions to menace the the peace and goi I will of society. i Fouty years is a long time to dream one dream. Most people would either see some hope of realization or give up the dream for some practical occupation. Tu kk k st i s to be an epidemic of failures am jt large retail business houses in C!i .-i.'o. They are attributable to speciiv and not to general causes. At tiik Denver, Colo., educational co;ive:it ion, Joseph Swan, president of the University of this State, was elected secretary of the department on Iliirher IMueation.

l'i:oiriA, 111., is now threatened with one of the most severe droughts in its history. The whisky trust and the l'e aria water works are both in the hands of United States receivers.
Kansas is one of the remarkable states of this country. She generally gets all the rain or not any. Just now people in Kansass are lleeing for their lives to escape death in the floods.
Tjikkk is no blotting out the fact that the debate on finance, now on in Chicago, will create more interest throughout the whole world than any other event of the same character that has ever taken place.
Now that a revival in commercial and industrial circles is at hand, with an accompanying increase in the wages of labor and a greater output of manufactured pn d ic.s, it seems probable that it is to be strengthened and helped along by the changed attitude of China toward the United States. The attitude of this country, toward China during the Chinese-Japanes war has had a tendency to soften the animosities of the Oriental nation toward America, and the most friendly feeling is said to exist. Every encouragement is now being offered to American capital and enterprise for investment in China. (Ireat systems of railroads are to be planned and developed. We are the m st skilled and practical railroad buildeis in the world, and our methods are more adaptable to the conditions to be met in China than those of any other nation. The building of railways in China by American workmen, with American material, will open up a new trade between America and China, which neither lUissia nor England will be able to reach. This will call for still greater products of our factories and soil, and promises to add materially to our now returning prosperity.
Tiik functions of electricity are multiplying day by day. It is now being used for suburban and short line service on a number of railroads, where it has amply proven its value for such service. It is now about to be adopted as motive power for suburban trains on the Illinois Central.
Some of the aldermen of Chicago and La Salle, 111., seem to be pretty bad men Two Chicago aldermen were indicted by a special grand jury but a day or ago for soliciting bribes. It now develops that an alderman of La Salle, in company with a gang of thugs has been collecting boodle in true highway robbery style.
Tiik true political doctrine for any patriotic man to entertain is that the welfare of the country is paramount to any party. The great difficulty with most of us is that the welfare of the party is of more importance than the country. There are many men who are actuated by the principle that the advancement of the leaders of either party is of more importance than either country or party.
A nkw bug has appeared in Illinois which has alarmed farmers not a little. It has attacked the timothy meadows in tin vicinity of Louisville and is said to resemble in shape a Colorado potato bug. Sample bugs have been sent to the state entomologist, oT Illinois, for his inspection. It now remains for him to classify the new insect pest and discover a germ with which to inoculate and destrov it.

It i ii-it the earnest convictions of a few members of a party upon any question that necessarily constitute the party policy upon that question. There are plenty of democrats who are gold bugs, but that docs not make the Democratic party a gold party, any more than does IJuck Ileinrichson make the party a free coinage party. There are democrats who are protectionists, and there are republicans who are free coinage advocates, but they do not commit their party on either issue.

Many of the old-school preachers believed that the longer the sermon, th better the result. "And lastly, brethren," usually came about forty minutes after the beginning, and the "lastly" part of the sermon usually spun itself out to a quarter of an hour or twenty minutes. It made little difference to the man in the pulpit how the heads of his congregation nodded and an occasional snore did not break the thread of his discourse But these things have
