Entered at the Plymouth Post Office as secondclass matter. A.R.ZIMMKIIMAN,Eiitok am Pkoi-kiktor. Sl'HSC Kll'TION' l'HICE. One Year Six Months T3. It is reported that Queen Victoria will abdicate the throne on her seventysixth birthday, May 21. CiKN. IIakkison left for Xcw York this week. It is said in political circles that this is very significant. The expresident has adopted this rule never to be interviewed upon the silver question. It was a current question during the time that resumption was agitated, that the way to resume specie payment was to resume. It is now suggested that the way to have bimetallism is to have bimetallism. The report that President Cleveland sent 6500 to the father of three children at Decatur, Ind., is denied. It did seem rather fishy, when considering the large campaign fund that will be needed, to impress upon the minds of the jeople what an excellent business-like administration Cleveland gave us during his reign. A political party is always a means, it never shoulu be a master, and experience shows it never will be over independent Americans, no matter what their political faith. To belong to a party is not to accept as a matter of course, and defend as a matter of obligation everything that may be done under the party name, or to support all candidates who may contrive to get its nomination. It is to support its measures and its men, where and when they are worthy of support. The sudden death of Kx-tJovernor Ira 1. Chase was startling news to his many friends in Indiana and his old home in Illinois. His death occurred at Saubec, Me., last Saturday, caused by erysipelas. Ira. 1. Chase made a remarkable record. He was born in Ill inois. "When the war broke out he en listed in the service, rising to the rank of major. After the war he commenced the study of theology, entering the mir istry shortly afterwards, lie became lieutenant governor of this state in 1SSS, and succeeded (Jo. Ilovey in 18Ü1 For the past few years he has been en gaged in evangelical work, being at the time of his death thus engaged. The Inter Ocean gives an interesting article on the decrease in circulation and gives the amount per capita as 822.07. It also states that this is the lowest per capita since 1890 when it was 22.82. In 18fJ2 the per capita was 824.44. The decrease to 822.07 at the present time has been in part due to the increase in population and the stoppage of the coinage of silver. According to the oflicial figures the amount of money in the treasury, which is not counted as in circulation, is 8175,534,705, less than it was in 1802. The whole amount of money in the country according to the treasury statement is now 82,105,451,703, whereas in 1892 it was 82,372,500,501, showing a decrease of 8177,147,738. No man who has kept track of the democratic party for the past twentyfive years and who takes the authorized declarations of the party, made in the recognized and usual manner, can main tain that the party is a free coinage or silver party. Of course there are dem ocrats who favor free coinage and bimetalism. But their are democrats who favor only a gold basis. The fact is that neither of the old parties can be called a free coinage party, yet it must be admitted that the declarations on rec ord made by the republican party at their conventions, in congress and every where, are much more decided on this question than are their opponents, and the expressed opinions of such noted republicans as Stewart, Teller, Ingall et al, are very much moie in touch with the popular sentiment on this question than are those of Cleveland, Bayard, Palmer, Gresham, Carlisle and the other leaders of democratic policy. To-night, at the Illinois Club rooms in Chicago, will occur one of the great est financial debates that has ever oc curred in this country. The principa contestants will be W. II. Harvey, au thor of "Coin's Financial School," and Trof. Laughlin, editor-in-chief of the Times-Herald. The seconds of Mr. Harvey will be C. S. Darrow, Ex-Judge S. P. McConnell and W A. Vincent For Laughlin will appear Lyman J (Jage, W. T. Baker and II. II. Kohl saat. The stage will be decorated with silver and gold certificates. The sub ject for discussion has this significan wording: "Resolved, That the United

States should enter at once upon the free coinage of silver at the ratio of lß to 1, independent of the action of any other nation." Great interest is manifested throughout the entire country over this the first gun of one of the hottest campaigns thiscountry has ever witnessed.
