In about half a mile Iledenstrom sawten tusks of elephants sticking up in the sand nnd gravel, and a largo sandbank on tho west coast of tho island was always covereil with elephants' tusks after a gale, leading him to hope that there was an endless amount of ivory under the sea! The notion has always very generally prevailed that the queen of the bees is an absolute ruler, and issues her royal orders to willing subjects. Hence Napoleon I. sprinkled the symbolic bees over tho imperial mantle that bore the arms of his dynasty; and in the country of the Pharaohs vhe bee was used as the emblem of a people sw eetly submissive to the orders of the kiug. But tho fact Is, a swarm of bees is an absolute democracy, and kings and despots can find no warrant in their example. The power and authority are entirely vested in the great mass, the workers. They furnish all the brains aud foresight of the colony, and both king and 'queen must ob?y. They regulate the swarming, and give the signal for the swarm to issue from the hive; they select and make ready tho tree in the woods and conduct tho queen to it. .lohn Iturroughs.
