MEXICAN TRAIN HORROR WORSE THAN BELIEVED. (Vrc-ck on the Inter Oceanic Railroad Near the City of Mexico Is an Appall inir l:astcr, 1200 Persons Itciiis Killed und "Wounded.
Ocatli List (iron. One of the most frightful accilonts in the history of the Mcxiran railroads, rvHtdtin in tin killing of 101 persons and tlio serious, if not f.-ttal. injury of nearly a hundred others, o.-runvd on th lnterOceanie Kailroad :it a point twenty-five miles from tho t'ity of Mexico. A few days !!l'i a j;reat nuinher of jiersons left the capital and the towns in the vicinity to go on a pilrimairo to the v'atholie Shrine at .Sa-re Monte. Tickets were sold at retimed rate? over the Inter-Oceanic line and this road carried the bulk of the pilgrims. Friday a lmi train, aboard of which there were l.'Jt) passengers, was returning fron the place of piljiriuing'. All went well until a point on the line midway between Teinaintla and Tenango was reached. On this part of the mad there is a steep im iine. the line nt one phico on it liavini a sharp curve, where it runs close to the et Ige of a high precipice. This is one of the most dangerous places on the ro.ui. and was rendered more so by the fact that the track Lore was not in the best condition. As the train began to run down the incline the speed increased, and soon it was running at a frightful rale. The passen gers ceased their laughter and joking und looked at each .other with a strange fear depicted in their fa.es. Steadily the moment um of the train, which was swaying and bounding fearfully, increased and soon the dangerous high curve was struck I'ngiiiic Hits the Curve, As the pilot wheels of the engine took the curve the locomotive swayed outward and either jumped the track or turned a rail. It dashed across the scanty space between the tails and the edge of the chasm and then plunged downward. One after another of the roaches, tilled with passengers, dashed after it and piled up in a mass of wreckage at the foot of the track, but most fortunately did not go over the edge of the precipice. As the fifth coach U-ft the metals it twisted and broke th coupling connectins it with th( coaches behind, it. Those coaches kept the rails and passed safely round the curve. After running a considerable distance they '.vcre stopped by the hand brakes. When the engine and th" three coaches fell to (he bottom of the ravine there was n fearful crash and. mingled with it. wero the shrieks of the affrighted passenger, which could easily be heard above the escaping steam of the engine, which was knocked to .pieces by the fall. In the meantime a number of passengers in the other coaches had returned to the scene of the wreck and devoted themselves to the work of rescuing those imprisoned in the wreck. The sight here was a grievous one. The carriages were shattered, and a majority of the occupants were lying beneath the wreckage. The shrieks and moans ot' the injured were heartrending, while many of the unhurt women and children muaned and wailed in an agony of terror. The train hauls were American, and pome of them, as soon as possible, tele graphed news of the disaster to the city. The intelligence quickly spread and caused the greatest consternation among the inhabitants, many of whom had relatives or friends on the train. THEY TALK OF TRADE. Cliic:ijr' Husfncrts Men" Views on tho Spring: Outlook Cnniltct. The opinion among Chicago merchants in all lines of business, as given in the Tribune, is that the outlook for the spring trade is not as bright as it should be. In many lines the volume of trade is not equal t that for the saun lime lashyenr. The tendency of. prices continues downward, ami prophecies as to when the bottom will be reached have almost ceased to he made. The encouraging features are that there is a more conservative policy on the part of the buyers, both in the matter of extending credits and in makiiiv purchases. There are almost ns many opinions why there i; not a more general trade prosperity as there are firms in business. Summarized sonic of them are: I.ecause Congress is playing polities instead of attending strictly to business. I'ecause there is not free coinage. liecause of Wall street and the gold bugs. I'ecause the farmer has had poor crops. because the farmer has had too goud crops and has overproduced. I'ecause we do not receive enough money for our exports. I'ecause every one is frightened without cause and cries wolf when there is no Wolf. I'ecause there is not enough legislation. Itecause there is too much legislation. ltecnuse trusts and combinations of capital have killed competition. Upon only on. thing do all agree. Wh:'reever there is diversified farming, in the States where everything does not depend upon one crop or a single industry, trade Is good. In Illinois. Wisconsin. Iowa, Michigan. Indiana and Ohio, where fanners have butter, cheese ami live stock as well as grain to sell, there is plenty of money and bills for goods are discounted. In Montana, the Dakotas, Kansas and Nebraska, where there have been drouths and crop failures, and where there is little diversity of industries, there iss a money famine. In the Northwest and west of the Missouri river traveling salesmen can scarcely earn their expenses. In the Southwest and South conditions aire reversed, and trade is unexpectedly good. (.Joods are being sold on a narrower margin of profit than over before, but collections everywhere are satisfactory. A Joint library co.nmittee of the National House and Senate rejected tinanImoiody the Simmons statue of t'rant prevented to the Covernmeiit by the (Jrand Army of the Republic. The work was declared u ii reeoni zahle without a label.

To l?Ifae!i Straw ;ools. As tlu rcyr.lt of j rok-np-d experiments. Keni'swarter and Kbell. as reported in a foreign journal, have originated nn itr.preved process for the bleaching of straw, wood, and similar libres. To 1(H litres of soft, cold water, 1.0 m err.iiis of pure crystallized oxalic acid are added, and then l.Hm snuns of peroxide of sodium are slowly stirred in; the liquor, when this is done, will still be acid, ai.d rcnuircs to be made feebly alkaline with silicate d soda or with more peroxide. The stuff to be bleacht il in a clean" state and free from praise is put into the alkaline bath of the mixture, and thus kept until bleached at :i temperature of from i0 to 100 deprees F.. when it is rinsed and freed from any traces of yellow in a weak acid l ath, such as tartaric, or by sIqw dryinp in the t pen air. Stich a bath as the above may be used over and over a pa in. and to save time may be made stronger. An economy may also be i fleeted by sultitutinp sulphuric for oxalic acid. - Sun.
