St. Jolin's R, June " Tlie screw steamship City of Washington, from Liverpool on Wednesday, May 25, via Queenstown 2 Gth, parsed Cape Iiaco at 9 o'clock Thursday evening, en route to. new -York. Her news was obtained by the news yacht of the Associated Press, but could not be forwarded until to-day, owing to the non-working of the wires. It is of the highest importance. The royal mail steamship Africa from New York, arrived at Liverpool on the 23d. The first battle .. was fought at Montebello. The battle took place on the 21st. The French accounts says that the Austrian?, 15,000 strong, under General Stadion, attacked the advanced posts of Marshal Bariguay De lliiliers, and were driven by General Forri's division after a fierce combat of four hours duration. The allies, including same Piedmontese cavalry, carred Montebello, but did not pursue the Austrians. The loss of t he latter is stated by the French at 1,200 to 2,000, and that of the French at G00 to 700, of whom many were officers. 300 Austrians, including a colonel, were taken prisoners. The Austrian account simply states that General Stf ndion push ed forward a reebimoirance by forced marches towards Silio and Montebello. but after a hot fight with a French force of superior strength . retreated behind the Po i in perfect order. The actual strength of the French is not stated, lleports say they numbered from G00 to 700, besides a regiment of Sardinian cavalry. A Sardinian bulletin also an nounces that the extreme left of Sardinian army, under Gen. Ceal drni, forced a passage over the Sesia, putting the Austrians to flight. "Other trifling engagements are reported. Gen. Garabaldi had entered Gaven with 0,000 men, his object being revolutionary. Prince Napoleon and a small French force had arrived at Leghorn. It is rumored that six English men-of-war had entered the Adriatic. LATEST. Gen. Guylaihas removed his headquarters to Garlasco,and has everywhere ordered the people to give up their arms, under pain of being shot for disobedience. Gen. Garabaldi has made 47 more prisoners. Revolutionary movements are roported in Lonibardy. The King of Naples was dead, and Francis II. had assumed the reins of government. England and France were about to send representatives to Naples. Political differences have arisen between Lord Palmerston and Lord John Russell. The defeat of the Derby ministery is anticipated on the meeting of Parliament. The Admiralty had formally invited tenders for monthly Australian service via Panama. A general meeting of the Atlantic Telegraph Co. had been called to sanction the agreement with the government, and the issue of preference shares of 000,000 of new capital. FromlVcw York.
