That Hour bon Article. A communication nppeared in tho Republican of last week, over the names of Win J Acknr nnd others, in which the Democrat ia subjected to a round of abuse far stating that seven Democrats had applied for admission into the lodge of Good Templars at Bourbon, and were every one blackballed. We obtained our information from a reliable source sufficiently so to justify ns in making the statement alluded to. We shall investigate the matter and if we have done injustice to tl e IoJije or any individual, we vill take great pleasme in netting tho matter right before. the pubUc. Af;;r reilin tha article we come to the conclusion that it amounts to about the same that Coxen's last one did simply nothing. They deny our statement but do not adduce any proof that they were incorrect. They say that they would have 'offered us their articb lor publication, only they supposed it would meet with ;he same fate that dxens did a refusal. Wo can inform them, and all others, that Coxe: did not ask U3 to publish his article, only to copy it from the Republican whw:h we respectfully declined doing. If a person, who feeU aggrieved at anything which may appear in our paper, has not manliness enough to meet us face to face. and request the use cf our columns to dofend himself, we are doubly sure we will not publish his lying, silly stuff from an--other p.'ipcr, and thus give his article two publications whilst ours had but one Coxen and the "illustrious four" know it not b-:cau33 they expected to meat with a refus.Vl that they did not come and ask us to ;publish tkeir articles, but it was because -they knew they contained utmitigated lies and the most disrespectful language, and tins re fore thev could not cammand sufiicient courage to request us to publish them. The closing paragraph ia the article contains a fling at us and is couched in language that will, to the readers of that paper, at once betray the author of the article. We have got used to such Hin?; from that source, and care a a little for them as we do for the author of them. Fourth of Jul v. The question has been asked us a number of times th past week, whether we .-are going to celebrate the fouth of July in Plymouth this year. We can only give -our opinion, and that is, we are not. Our people as a general thing, are very liberal And are always ready to do their part, but none of them caro about taking the reponsibility or trouble of setting the thing In motion. It has been proposed to hold .a granJ temperance celebration in this jlace on the fourth. We are not opposed to temperance celebrations, but the fourth f July in a day in which sectional and party feelings should bo laid aside, and all should unite in celebrating our nation's birth day, irrespective of this or that parly, sect or order. We are opposed to a Sunday School celebration, a temparance celebration, or any other kind of a celebration that has for its object the good of i particular class of people, 01 that day. liiere are a great many good and patriotic iouls, who have tho spirit of "7G coursing through their veins, who do not belon" to Sunday Schools or Temperance societies, and consequently would not icel disposed to unite in celebaating either one on that day. If we have a celebration let us have ,a rcmlar old fashioned one. furnish the iboys jdl the . fire -crackers they want, en'ageallthe anvils ia ' town and furnish powder to keepth?m boomingall day, bore hble3 in all the logs and stumps - within bearing and 'bust 'em bring out all the banners, and drums, and fif?s and brass int nmnfs And m.ilrt all the noi& possi ble; prepare a free dinner and invite every body to 'pitch in, and our woid for it all j will have a good time. Since thü above was in typj the Hook und Ladder Company met and appointed Äcommi'.teo for tho purpose of taking iniatory steps toward celebrating the 4th in ftO appropriate manner. Wo mentioned no . names, neither did wo slate to which party they, if there were nn3" snc" ,n town- belonged. Our remarks party as tho other;? but from the fact that it caused Mattingly so much mental' disquietud, we infer that his party was'' mostly ia, fault. . AVe consider it very unkind j ü tho Kl man, to misinterpret our. moan j in ev for the purpose of injrraSialin"" him self into the favor of those to whom' our remarks 'might apply. His remarks in relation to Messrs. Gardner it IlasJanser. though not disrespectful in word, were entirely out of place, from the fact that they were designed to leave the impression on the mit-d of the reader that they were the only persons in town of the class wo named, whereas,-had he but continued his observations a little further, he would have found that Heller & Galenline, Woodrow t Co., and others, were first in the class, being engaged in a more extensive business. In mentioning these names we intend no disrespect to tho gentlemen, but merely do it for the purpose faithfully following that good old rule which says "do unto others as they do unto you." We excuso Mattingly for making a political matter of this, when our article had no reference to politics, knowing that if he was no: en aired in misrepresenting: us he would have boen doing som other meanness, which would have had no more effect on community than this has on us. Slate Convention. The Indiana State Central Committee have ordered that a Democratic State Convention be held in the the city of Indian apolis on Monday the 9th day of January, ICG J, at 10 o'clock a m, for the purpose of nominating candidates for the different State offices, to bo filled at the enuing elecf'on, and the appointment of delegates to the next Nationol Convention f ir the nomination of candidates for President and Vice President of the United States; and that said convention shall consist EXCLUSIVELY of delegates to be appointed by the Democracy of the several counties in the State, upon the basis of one delegate for every three hundred votes, and one for every fraction over one hundred and fifty votfs cast for James Buchanan at the last Presidential election; but no county to have less than orc delegate. This will trive Marshall county three deleg-ites, and Stark county one. It being made known to the committee that O. A. Everts, the member from the Oth District, had removed from the State, on motion. Lot Day jr., was appointed to till said vacancy. itiTThe Daptist Chuich in this place, ! have secured the services of Mr Simons to officiate as their pastor. The services will hereafter be held in Westervelt's Hull, commencing next Sunday week. We hope this congregation will prosper, as our town need the influence of more than two rerularly organized churches. (Tor tlie Democrat.) Ft. Wavxe, June C, 1C53. Eds. Dem.: Since my last letter, nothing of wery grave importance has transpired in this immediate locality. The news of the agreement upon this place by the CommissioneJs appointed to select a new Slate's Prison, created some little interest for a spell pleasing some of our citizens and displeasing others. But a3 the matter is not yet definitely settled and will not be, until some lime this week, when the Governor will be here the particular manifestations have principally subsided. During the past week 0 ten days we had an abundance of rain, and the prospects of all growing crops are rather flattering. I notice in papers from other portions of the Stale, that similar causes and results have been experienced. I re gret to learn the poor prospect of the wheat crop in your, section, and hope it may not prove as disastrous as you aniioipate.' For the especial benefit of tho local columns of the Republican, you may tell its editor that wc had one doy finrht hereon Sunday morning. The excursioniits to the Railroad celebration at Cincinnati, of which you speak in your last paper, had a joyous time wi;h a lot of "hale fellows well met." The Gazette of Friday morning gives quite a full account of their doings at' the Queen City; By the completion of the Railroad connection just celebrated, Chicago, and all intermediate points ou the . Pittsburg. Fort Wayne and "Chicago. Road, will have' an almost immediate connection with Cincinnati, but they will have to come via. Fort Wayne, ' w hero they can stop nd ; do their trading- especiaally' when eqfficient inducements are held out bv way of liberal advertising in , the nowspapers. Customers will then learn wh'ero to make their purchases. , ' We have been some little annoyed for a few days past by the tedious lectures of a Miss Hewlett, uponfthe subject of spiritualism, and. at the present session of the Commissioners' Court, the! Commissioners themselves will doubtleas be somewhat annoyed bythö72?iViVaow rappers at the door of the Court room, for permission to, test the practical benefits of the spirits rthem;lve3. Of this, however, I perceive by

'and for selling on the' Sabbath, as well as selling without license at ' all, certain and effective prosecutions are sure to follow. . Xot-A-Been-ax I was somewhat astonished, and not a little amused, at the ungenerous, ungenticmanly nnd uncalled for attack upon your correspondent "D," in the last Marshall Co. Republican. I know of nothing that I havü done to call down upon me nearly a column. of low and vul gar abuse and vituperation from the pen of one Ignatius Matlinghj. Do you? . Or docs any one? Not longer ago than last Saturday evening week, ho approached me at Pershing's Drug Store, in presence of one of the firm, and with extended , hand very cordially bid us the time o' day, and apparently one of th'j most social creatures in the world talked about matters and things in general, and especially about an extraordinary effort made on the part of Republicans of this city to get tun to move here, as he could 10 .-t Tons Dawsox out; that if he should g .. .hack at him once, he could fix him, c:j., ttc., all in s-ch gusto, with his usual snarling, self-conceited, and unmeaning countenance, and with his nose turned up as though he was burning some appropriate place to put it perhaps in somebody's lushms, and really from its appearance, it had been there. After all this, and having seen his last p.iper, I should not be as'onished to yet learn to a certainty that there is considerable of the base hypocrite about him. lie seems to be considerably troubled about an item I h.nd clipped from an Indiana paper in my last letter, in relation to the negroes in Canada, and intimated that I got it from no such source. If the stupid old fool will take the trouble to examine tho files of the Columbia City News, about the time mv letter was written contaiuing the extract, ho can find another jyst like it in that paper. His allusions to my former habits, and intimation to reformations, &c. in fact his whole article, with an eye to the necessity for it shows rather conclusively that he timply , wanted a tilt at me anyhow. Why it is, I am unable to divine, unless il is because he sei l f,,r "Mose Canary birds!" Upon inquiry I can find no person that ever wanted Mattingly here. Even Bill Hoffman himself evinces no particular anxiety. He concludes there are enough of his color hero already. Under all the circumstances 1 am rather inclined to believe he lied about it, and that there is no probability of his ever locating here, unless the Sheriff of Marshall County may hare occasion, in his official capacity, to bring him here, which is not at all imptobible, if he gets his just deserts. His allusions to my ''experience as h practical amalgamationist," was the most unfortunate cuwof all, and tor his sake and the sake of the Editorial fraternity generally, this thing has been kept a most profound secret; but by some elip of the tongue or other unavoidable accident, he has become unfortunately too familiar with a correct krowledije of his ancestry, for when 'B was so unfortunate as to fall into the embraces not embraces either but snares of 'practical amalgamation, Mattingly poor soul was the only illegitimate offspring. So sure as one position is true, the other is also. This too may havo something to do with his bitter and unceasing opposition to the fugitive slave law, ana nir.J; to a certain extent, account for the peculiar shapo of - his face and nose, especially when lie hcai'B any Ol? sp?ai; ol kidnapniW. &c. &c. But the truth is I believe he willfully lies when he intimates that anything of the kind if the fact, and it he should say so, I know he V. Besides, he never heard of any such charge, but il was conceived and ' nurtured in his corruDt and rotten brain. 1 and thenct! communicated to the columr.s of Ins filthy sheet. Would it not be better for him to carefully read and profit by an article under the , head, of 'Editorial Courtesy,' which nppeared in the Daily Ft AVayno Uepuhlieaii of the 4th inst.? If I was sure the Editor of tho 'Republican would take no offense at tlit assochtion, I Vould hand him over, to the tender mercies of that article, and let: i what I . havo here Slid suffice for the present. The Sentinel is not only a political paper, but U lurnib-nes information ' upon every topic of interest or value to the general reader, and we can say, without egotism, that no better family paper is published. - Wo : hope that this year it will be placed in tho hands of every democratic family in tho State, and it can be if each subscriber will induce his neighbor to take it. The Sentinel has been in operation,' as will be seen by the abovs extract, for ' the past 'nineteen years, during which time it has been the acknowledged oriran of the democracy of Indiana. It is ably edited, and its publishers seem determined to make it one of the neate?t papers in the State. DIED Wednesday morning, June Glh 1859, Eugene Hctciiisson, aged 2G years and 10 montus. Our hearts are filled with sorrow and our eyes dimmed with tears, as we write the above the brief record of one who has been very dear .to us. Wo have known Eugexe long, and intimately; he had become very near to us almost a brother. and the memory of the many happy days spent with him will always remain a gieen spot in the desert waste of life. That he should be thus called in the early summer of his manhood while life itself was so real and earnest, so full of beauty and action, and with the bright prospect of many happy and useful days is indeed a severe affliction to us and to his many triends. The sincere and unaffected grief, with which the news of his death was received among his friends anil acquaintances, is an evidence of the high cscem in which he wa9 held by those who knew him best. His work seemed unGnshcd his labors undone but Death, the Great Finisher, touched him, and all was complete. Without a murmur ho laid aside tho implements of earthly toil, and h's spiiit took its flight to join the innumerable hosts who labor in that heavenly work shop, where the' Divine Architect fashions and forms the wondrous Machinery of the Universe. Tiuly the keen sickle of the Destroyer has been among us. Only a short year ago he laid the partner of his life-h!s dear Lizzie in the silent grave, and now, he too, has started on the same dark journey. She only wentbelore, to find and show the way. May the light of that pure and holy love dispel the darkness that hovers over the dim pathway. May its sweet rays guide tho fainting spirit over the dark and shoreless river, and lead it up to the throne of Him "who doeth all things well." "All at rest riow all dut! ware flows on wave But Oie sea dries not! What to us the grave? It brings no real homily; we s!;h, Tausc fur awhile n.l murmur "All must die!" A Card. Eds. Democrat. I withdraw my name as a candidate for Clerk at the approaching Convention. .My friends who urged the announcement of my nama will please excuse me for withdrawing it. My busiiness is such that I cannot turn my attentcntion in that way. I am ready to support the nominee of the Convention. S. B. CORBALEY. Green Township, June 6th, 1059. The Democrats in the several Townships are requested to meet in township CCJ""ention 011 the 1 Ith day of Juno next, to elect delegates to the County Convention. Tins step is highly necessary, an 1 is most earnestly urged upon the Dvmocrata'of every township, andli is hoped that no township will neglect it, and particularly that Democrats will not permit any others to meet and appoint for them while they stay at home.
