Draining Slops from Houses. I shall, without attempting to disparage. the judgment or the practice of otheis, proceed to describe the plan which I have adopted, in order to avoid, on the one hand, the unsightly and inconvenient accumulation of ice near the kitchen dooi in the winter; rnd on the other the still more offensive eflluvia from the sink gutter in the summer. The water is conducted from the wash trough into the drain below, through the two inch lead pipe some two and a half feet long, and so curved as ,o always allow it to stand full of water, which is, of course, displaced by each successive deposit, thus forbidding the ingress of cold air, or the return of noxiou3 gases from the cesspool below. It will be observed that to secure the advantages of this arrangement, the drain must be carefully closed around the insertion of the pipe. The drain is made of brick, with a fall of nearly an inch to the foot "f nd sufficiently deep under ground to protect it from freezing; it terminates at a suitable distance from the hon?e, in a pit of four by six feet, and live feet, Availed up to the surface of the ground and secure! v covered. As there is considerable waste' water from the wa-.h hra?. and kitchen, where there are several in a family, this depository will occasionally require to be pumped o:it. I have therefore provided a cheap pump, o primitive and simple in its construction as to have cost less than two dollars; aud vet so efficacious in its performance as to discharge, with ea.e to the operator, a hogshead of water per minute. It is nrule of pine boards, about five inches square, with a stationary valve near the bottom, and a movable one attached to the piston rod, as in the common pump the piston is worked without a lever. The contents of the cesspool are tlm.5made to subserve a valuable purpose, both as a renovator of the soil and also for irrigation. In the latter relation it is exceedingly useful to the garden; for in a minute a man will throw up both moisture and nourishment enough to thoroughly irrigate every part of it at a time the plants most need it. I have been thus explicit, because I believe this arrangement 3as many palpable advantages over every plan of conducting the drainage away on the surface; and because I have thought that a lack of perspicuity in a communication on so very common-place a subject
would detract from the little merit it might otherwise possess. C. WESTGKOYE. Country Gentleman. The Time to Prune. It was in pursuance of a desire to ascertain whether we were doing the best vre could for orchards, as to the lime for pruning, that some ten years ago I commenced a series of experiments in a small way at other seasons of the year in early winler, in March, April, and May. Neither of these seasons proved to he batter than that now so usually tah en, even where every precation was taken to prevent the waste of the sap. But upon carrying the experiment into July the season of all others into which labors crowd the hardest it was found that the wounds healed readily. Indeed, without making any pretensions to infallibility, I venture to assert that from the middle of June to the first of Augustas the most favorable time to prune apple orchards, as regards the speedy healing over of the wontuts. The vi iter cannot doubt that he has injured two of his orchards by a long-continued course of winter and spring pruning. It has been iinposssble in some instances to prevent the wounds then made frora flowing sap it would burst off paint, shellac, and anything else I have ever known to prevent its escape. And in some cases I have known it to flow. for two or even more years, and untU. the trees had become disease L In other cases, where the sap did not continue to flow into the second year, the trees presented au unhealthy, stained appearance, where the ap 1m , flown down their trunks leaving an unsightly black coating upon the outer bark. And all thi3 ' disease has come from pruning in the wrong time i. e., in th3 winter and soring. . C. W. MACÖMBER.

HiiiM!h!iiminiH 5 IIIiEIIIIIKIIIiieilü W A FTER YEARS OF STUDY AND Experiment, Dr. üoback, the eminent Swelih Ph)8ician, succeeded in producing a medicine from twenty-three different species of mountain horl of his native land, which acts directly on the causes of disease in the blood, and by restoring the corrupted fountain of life.to a condition of health and purity, expels disease from the system, wherever it may be located, or whatever may be its characiei. Indigestion, nervous complaints", epileptic nnd other fits, coughs, consumption in its early stages, sore throat, bronchitis, fever and ague, "asthma, low spirits, sexual incapacity, feminine weakness, pricking of the skin, symptomatic of paralysis, rheumatism, neuralgia, tumor, cancer, diabetes, lassitude and debility, diarrhea, and all ijtlier disorders of Mie organs of respiration, the lirer, the kidneys, the stomach, the nerves, or the muscular fibre, are unerringly cured by tins preparation. It is to the MATEKiEs morbi or seeds of disease what an alkali is to an acid: it neutralizes them with absolute cer tainty, w hile at the same time it regulates the se cretions, removes obstruciions from the bowels, creates appetite, renews bodily vigor, and regenerates every animal function. Such is the nature, such are the effects of Dr. Roback's famous Scandina vian Blood Pnrifier, which, if takenin coniunction with his Scandinavian Blood Pills, will not only obliterate the most painful disease, but prevent their recurrence, ana lengthen life beyond the ordinary span. In the "Scandinavian Blood Pills," Dr. Roback presents the result of twenty years of experience, hard study and experiment as to what a perfect pill should be. No one can doubt their superiorty after one single trial. Price of the Scandinavian Blood Purifier, $1 perbottl,or $5 per half-dozen: Scandinavian Blood Pills, 25 cents per box, or five for$l. Perü, Miama Co., Ind., Aug. 4, 1857. Dr. C. W. Roback: I have received so much benefit from your Scandinavian Blood Purifier and Biood Pills, that I have thought it my duty, and it is ro less my inclination, to give you a plain statement of my case. I was for years afflicted with that bane of all comfort and efficiency in business, dyspepsia. To recapitulate all the so-called remedies which I have used to rid myself of this disease, would indeed make a melancholy catalogue. 1 also consulted with the best physicians I could hear of. I was induced to try your remedies through the persuasions of a friend, and after using them a few days was greatly benefitted, and in a short time, less than a month, I was entirely and permanently cured. ' I was also afflicted with the most violent nervous headache, wnich I suppose was produced bv my disordered stomach, for when mv dvspepsia lett me, my neauacne leit with it. 1 no'v feci better in everv respect than I have for ten vears. Very t.-üly yours, JOHN S DEMUTfl. Ci.vci.nxati, Friday, Sept. 4, 1857. Dr. Roback Dear Sir: Having been afflicted with neuralgia orrheumatism for the past year and a half, and having seen your medicine, called the Scandinavian Blood Purifier, h'ghly recommended by gentlemen with whom I am acquainted, I wra induced to try it, but not before I had used various other medicines. After using two bottles, i Uli its effects very sensibly, and upon using two more, I found myself perfectly cured. Dr. Morse was the firsji m:in to est:tllish the fact that all diseases arise from. IMPURITY OF THE BLOOD that ourstrtiigth health and life depend upon this vital fluid. When the various passage? become clogged, and do not act in perfect harmony with the different - functions of the Itody, the blood loses its action,, becomes thick, corrupted and diseased; thns causing all pains, Htkncss and distress of every name; our jstrenirth is exhausted, our health we nredepiiTedof, and if nature is not assisted in throning oft the stagnant humors, the blood will become choked and cease to net, and thus our light of life will ho forever blown out. .How important then that we should keep the various passages of the body free and open. The second is a plant which is an Expectorant, that opens and unclogs the passage to the hing, and thus in a soothing manner, jcrforms its duty by throwing offphlegm and other humors from the lungs by copious spittrig. The third is a Diuretic, wHch give case and double strength to the kidneys; thus encouraged, they draw large amounts of impurity from the blood, which is then thrown out bountifully by theurinary or water passage, and ninth could not have been discharged in any other way. The fourth is a Cathartic, and accompanies the other properties of the pills while enrraired in pu .t: r.. r .1 r 1 t .1 rifying the blood; the coarser partic es of impurity which caanot pats by the other outlets, esc thu taken up and conveyed off in great quan'-itics by tke bowels. Dr. Morse's Pills hare ad Jed to themselves victory upon victory, by restoring millions of the sick to blomirir health and happiness. Yes, thousands who have been racked or tormented with sickness, pain and anguish, and whose feeble frames have been scorched by the burning elements of raging fever, and w.o have been brought, as it were, within a step of the silent grave, now stand ready to tcstif that they would have been numbered with the de , had it not been for this great and wonderful medicine, Morse'a Indian Root Pills.
