OFFICIAL PA i'EX OF THE COUNTY D. & P. JilcDOXALD,::::::::::::: Editors. PLYMOUTH, THURSDAY, APRIL - - - gs, IS59. Messrs Hounds k I.AXGDOWire our only authorized advertising Agents for Chicago. E. I. Coxen. Obedient to his peremptory demand, we notice this notable individual whose name appears in thi columns of the Marshall County Republican of the 21st, under an article so pregnant wiili misrepresenitions, that every lover of truth must blush with shame at the audacity with which it is put f rih. ' Rut in justice to him we must say, that l.e should not be held responsible for the language in which it is emphatically c-mche 1, because he is n t the father of it, ;t:il had no part nor lot in the matter, unless to lend his name to his republican allies, to be placed to such an artiel as thej' had the mendacity to conceive. Who that was, the editor of the Republican ca:i speak fr himself if l.e will. Hoar ibis Coxen speak: "There is not one bit of truth in the foreoin extract, so far as it relates to myself." This is ground out after purporting to copy an article of ours of the 31st of Mircli, wherein we stated (from information) that this E. R. Coxen participated in the disgraceful mob that entered a Grocery in Bourbon, took a man's liquor by force and destroyed it. Now the truth or falsity of this lies in the simple fact, whether he did cr did not take part in it. Hear what was disclosed by the testimony on the trial of said Snyder for an assault and battery with intent to kill, and then judge ye of the man. On the same day the act was perpetrated, a committee was sent to this man Snyder, modestly requesting him to 'dry up,' aud on the evening of said day the mob assembled (or happened) at this grocery, among whom was found Coxen, and after one Rolton (a Democrat, of course !) had mad a purchase of som eatables, some '.'tic called fr whisky, and was told by Snyder that he had none for them; whereupon Jenkins (another Democrat ! ! ) made thorough search in the front part of the grocery tor the 'needful,' and found none. At this time one Xeidiij took a candle and s;iid we will see. Coxen, the Peace Officer, nodded assent, and, in the lan'uairo of the -witness, "m rde mo:ion with his head and eyes fo go toward the Inck room,' and they all 'rushed at the signal toward the -back room. Snyder seeing ' them, rushed ahead, and ordered them to leave his house and hi his property alone, at the same time raising ms Tiiii'ds and telliio-l O i uieru u ui'.-y uu not leave lie would shoot. .1 r .1 ,. i i , ... Cjxh, the -peace ofiijer,' ordered him as 'fntu:l Vi uncock and put up Iiis pistols; ob'dL-nt to llit warn in o vnlio rf n fil.i..! ,,i i .... lie did so. but as soon as his rnsfol pr' do-.vn they snirted again towards his liquor h;ch at this time was in three feet of Coxen and Snyder. Snydor again raised his pistols, ordered them to leave his prop- j e.-ty alone or he would shoot. Then it! was that duty, personified in Coxen, nerved his arm to do tho State s.vrae service, and he seized Snyder and encircled him wiih his friendly arms, and as a friend ordtred Kn nit.d.t t.-iLin mwiv fn.m bim I - -"- ..-u-i. 1 " J . 1 i . . II I III i ' , . , , i-i. i ; which was done; and m his enthusiastic , , ... , . , ... t embrace holding him long enougli for the , , - , , I tj.iunce of tho mob to tumbla his liquor - , . , , , . , m of his house and destroy it; after which . ,, . . . . , , the welkin was made to ring with the vie- , . , . . torioiis shout of those desperadoes over a , ,, . ,., , ,v t fallen f.. (the whisky barrel). These are . . t .v-i.-, its jjm.li us u v a person present at the examination before Esquire Case, which were sworn by the witnesses! . on. said investigation. Snyder was acquitted by the court, having, ia its opinion, committed no ofiense. Now where is the candid .man, unbiased by prejudice, who will say that Coxen did uot participate iu that disgraceful transact- j .uu, aim was noi in laci a cniei actor, now ! is it that E. It. Coxen, a Justice of the Peace, and as his official title speaks, a Veace officer, and a member of the Good Templars, juat at that particular time happened at that grocery where liquors were bold, together with that mob, and so soon after the edict had gone forth that Snyder must 'dry up?' How iii it that when one of the mob had tak-sn the caudle with the avowed intention of finding liquor if it waa ther, this peace officer gave his secret assent to the net by the nod of hi? head, ttc, and yet knew nothing of it? How is it that this peace officer, whose duty it wis to quell all breaches of the peaci committed in his presence, was found in the middle of this mob, ordering Snyder (who waonly protecting his own property) to stay his hand against these lawless men, and never raise his warning voice, or with friendly arm arrest the first viol .tuft of the law, and the prima movers of the act which he felt it his duty to put tlown, in order to prevent a murder from being committed, which he thought was the duty of every good citizen, and especially a Peace Officer? How is it that tLis ßingled-eyed justice stood within three feet of the barrel of liqur, one man having searchad the front ro ni, and a second s arting for ihe hock room, arcrredly to hunt for liquor, and yet
Coxen bear nothing of it? was he deaf or blind? How is it that this official, surrounded aalie was, the whisky barrel tumbled out end over end, making noise enough to arouse the neighbors from their ..lumbers, he passing close by when the liquor was spilled, when the shout of victory rang upon the midnight air from the throats of that brave band of Spartans, and yet he sec no whisky, nor heard it mentioned only from women that some liquor bad been destroyed by a couple of Democaats, not a republican being present taking any part by act or deed in the transaction? Does he state these things ofiicialljf as he acteil on said occasion? We presume lie does. "Eyes had he and saw not; ears had he and heard not."
"Who painted Justice blind, did not declare What Magistrates should he, hut what they arc Not so much 'cause they rich and po jr should weigh In theirjust scales alike; but because they Kaw blind with prejudices are grown so weak of sight They'll sooner feel a cause, than see it right." Now, Coxen, if you have any desire to make an honest man of yourself, why don't you state that the ten or twelve who were taken up for liot and tried before Esquire Coons, were charged under the directions and request of the defendants themselves by one o! their own friends, with one Lawyer Wise, Att'y for the State, and J. O. Parks defending? and why dcit you further state that the whole programme was arranged in a general council, held prior to the action being had, in which the counsel for the State, also counsel for the defendants and the defendants in person, were present, and took part in the deliberations of that august body; and that the modus oieranJi was carried out to the letter as previously resolved? and why don't you further state that the farce might be more complete, Wise, the State's representative, dismissed as to all those against whom there was any considerable testimony, among whom was yourselt? and when you state no Republican by act or deed took part in tho transaction? Why don't you also stato that the said twelve persons who were arrested at their own request, in order to bar another prosecution were all Republicans, and if they were not by act or deed interested, why was it necessary to have an actiou barred as to them? Speak freely, Peace Officer. ———<>——— Immortal Pike's Peak. During the past few weeks we have scrutinized the intelligence from Pike's Peak pretty closely, and have found that all the reliable news is very discouraging to those who have entertained the delusive idea of making fortunes thus without any exertion of mind or body. This is but the realization of our worst fears in regard to the stupendous humbug. The greater part of the intelligence from that region concurs in the statement that a man who thoroughly understand [sic] mining cannot possibly make over one dollar per day, which is about twenty per cent less than day-labor-ers make in the States. A gentleman whom the Logansport Pharos endorses as reliable, writes to that paper from St Louis that the whole thing has exploded, and that every one who has returned from the mines, brings unfavorable reports. The incalculable number of persons who have returned from the mines and reported rich diggings, prove to be but a few speculators in paper towns in Missouri and Kansas. A fair specimen of this humbugging gas was published in the St Joseph County Forum (and afterwards corrected) to the effect that two brothers from that county had returned from the diggings with $18, 000 in gold, and that they would return in a few days, accompanied by their friends. It is very common for those who intend going, or have already started, not to believe a word that is said against the probability of gold being found there, but greedily devour every word that is favorable, and almost invariably enlarge on newspaper statements which were unreasonable enough for all practical purposes. To prove that it is a speculating scheme, we need but advert to the superhuman exertions which the rival towns are making in order to induce the emigrants to start from their respective locations. The newspapers, let-ter-writers and citizens, are putting their best foot forward in order to convince the public that their town is the <only> place where complete out-fits can be obtained at reasonable rates. St. Jo., St. Louis, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, and many of the smaller towns are reaping the benefit of the "sell." A gentleman whose name we believe is Mohler, living in this town, has returned from a trip in that direction. He says he got thirty miles on the plains, and found so little corn (at two dollars per bushel) and provisions of all kinds, and hearing nothing but discouraging reports, became disheartened, and retraced his steps. One of the company which started from this county, has written back that if it was not for the name of the thing, he would return home. We opine there are many others now en route for the Peak, who are in the same fix. In conclusion we would advise all who have not already started, to stay; and those who are now on the road to return as soon as possible. ———<>——— ——>M'lle PICCOLOMINI sings in Chicago this evening.
