swimming with tear3, and ho so trembled from bend to foot, while his conduct and demeanor bore such an impress of truth 1 fulness -and sincerity, that wo could not

villi happiness, aod a sweet smile played over and lit up his handsom features. We asked him to come in, but he merely step ped forward timidly, so as to catch our ear, nnd earne3tlytthGugh.5tuttenngiy wnispered, "Mamma prayed lor vou last night," and then disappeared .13 noiselessly as he 1 had come. Thank God, thought we, for that mother's prayer I And though years have passed since then though "we have bustled lhroih noisy incidents, and mingled thro' life itiuggles, as we are forced to do a temiTibrance ofthat " Mamma prayed for röu," still sounds as grateful and as sweet as when it felliVom the lips of that innocent boy.
Agriculture. .f-Bulfew people arc awaro of tte i.n manse falling otf in the ßtnrlo agricultural products of the oi ler States, as exhibited bjr the census reports. New England, for instance, ia 1840, rai?d over 2,000,000 . bushels of wheat, but in 1850 she yielded but 1.000,000 a decline of fifty per cent in ten years. The population, iu tha raean time, had consideiably increased. There has been a considerable decline, ur.donbt- ' edly, since 105J. The four States of Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and Alabarna, which raised 1 2,000,000 bushels of ' tt heat ia 1810, raised but 5,000,000 bushels in 1853. The number ot sheep in the State of New York had decreased bo that there were nearly 800,000 less than - there were thirty years ago. "Within a pariod of five years the decrease has been nearly fifty per cent, while the decrease in thJhumbei of horses, cows and swine is about' fifteen per cent. In 1845 the product of wheat wa3 18,394,75'J bushels. It , La3 steadily declined since, until the pro- , duct of the pi3t year dil noi exceed G,000,000 bushels. The older sections of our country are becoming mora and more dependent upon the granary of tho North-west for their supplies of leading agricultural products. Their land is getting worn oat and unproductive, and the people are turning their attention to manufactures and commerce. - In time, scientific agriculture, directed by the resources of wealth, will re
claim, in almost all its old fertility, those districts; but for the present thoy must s look eUe where, in a measure, for the great supplies of the staff of life. The open.ing of new territories, soon to become J States, iu the West, i3 the greatest of .blessings to the eld Atlantic States, not t only as relieving them cf considerable population thsy can well spare, but a3 a3'si3ting to keep down the price of agricultural products to a low figure. A rich mold, formed by setting clover, is worth more than the same number o! pounds of ciover. Four hundred pounds f dry plants will yield one hundred of mold. - Swamp muck or peat, when dry, will take up, without dropping, four times its owo weight of water. Hence the necessity of thorough drainage. A cubic foot of arabla land will held forty pounds of water. Whax 13 Comixo Now. A mysterious passage in a letter from New York ic the Boston Journal (regular correspondent) reads as follows. Who does it mean, and what does it mean? am informed on unquestionable authority, that next week a paper will be rad before one of the leading societies of New York, that will reverse vhe judgment of the natioa in respect to a prominent General in the war of the Revolution, and will clear up what has so far been a mysterious passage in his life. A lettei has been found iu the well known hand-writing of the Geneial himnlf, in which a proposition was made tc. General How to whip the Yankees; and tho manner in which it could be dono vas pointed out. The paper is ready to be communicated, and will be, it is presumed, next week. The treatment of General Washington tiwards the distinguished ofSeer has been the subject of much comment, and the abandonment of a post, which was nearly a flight on his part, has-been involved in obscurity; but the papcfa iKw come to light explain these transactions and vandicate the Father of his country. He supposed the exposure would dq more damage than good, and he chose to hard hi own conduct maligned rather than damage or wound a cause so dear to Iiis heart as the cause of American freedom. I would not write thus if I had not the lest üuthority for the statement." nEJEscs.. of Widows. Some people haviC prejudice Against widows,- but for our part wo never could tell for what. Girls will do rery well in their places, but one widow is worth a half a dozen of them any day. . Girls are so shy, so timid, re served, so baahlul. Very lew of them know; how to make love, and when they do urdejstand it, it is awkwardly done; but widows understand - the; whole .process; they know when to advance and when to retreat; when to lay siege to a heart, and whetf 'to attack it by storm. CTorT cases bare succumbed to the dazzling bright eye of the widow, clad in weeds, than were ever taken by the dreamy, raelctolyorbs of maidenhood. Believe us, thre is more real danger in lb) dark wav ing tresses of a bereaved one of twenty-two lark in th golden locks of guldom Tb.3 old project for the format i n of a EtitJ from portions of Tennessee, Virginia tad North Carolina, has been revived.

I will plant thee a garden of gorgeous loveliness, culled from nature s most ardent designs, warmest tints, and sweet smelling incense." Vicissitudes'of Life. The Cincinnati Enquirer has the following: Passing along the street yesterday, our attention was suddenly drawn 10 a scene not a little novel and interesting in its character. A GENTLEMAN Who, two years ago, lay upon nt.at his physicians and all Ins friends believed to be his death bed, is now alire and in the full rigor of health. His discaae was Consumptioi , of which nearly all his relatives had died. The circumstances vhich led to his recovery were as follows: His younger brother was in the habit of reading to him from books alout the house to while away his weary hours. One day he read to him from aa old book published in London about the middle of the seventeenth century, of what was styled "A eympel and certain remmeedce for diseases of ye Lungs." Not wholly without hope, and unwilling to leavo anything untried which cavo promise of relief, the sick and dyins: man had the prescribed remedies prepared Jm i. - mi ix r tiand commenceu lis use. , i ue rcsuii was iavoraoie. In two months he was able to walk about the premises without difficulty, and in sey;;n months from the time that he commenced its nse hö was entirely well, and has not been confined a day since. Grateful towards an all-wisö providence for hi3 restoration, he prescribed it for all in his vicinity who were afflicted with diseases of the lungs and general debility, and in every case it has proved effective. " Thoroughly satisfied that it is the only safe and certain cue for Consumption, and wishing to do his fellow binirs who ure suffering, as much pood as possible, has concluded to Ecnd the recipe, with full instructions for putting up and using the medicine, free to all who may orther it.
