A. Story for Farmers' Girls. Jemima Drake was a beautiful girl; Her father was a fr-rmer, his wife wa3 a farmer's wife and a good one too loved her husband, was faithful to her family, had but one fault, and strange it was that she had that one she always felt that it would have been a little better to have had a husband, as good every way as he rs, who had .some other employment: and she cherished hope seldom uttered that her daughters would not marry farmers. Jemima was twenty, with all the glorious of young blushing, just developed womanhood upon her. There were shuckings, quilting3, apple paring, and all such pleasant things m the neighborhood. The young folks saw each other at church, and sometimes mat between Sundays; Jame3 Darlington loved Jemima. John Davenport and Joseph Clark loved her. Jemima loved Jani33, and could have loved Jean and Joseph as well as not. She was a girl to love and to be loved. Any young man would have been a heartless fellow not to have loved her, and any girl, not to love James Darlington, would have shown a lack of appreciation for the good and true hearted. Between these last two, there -would have haen a solid, bona fide

-Potatoes Gerald Ilowatt of New Jersey, writes in Country Gentleman, that lie can raise better and more even sized potatoes from cuttings with but one eye, than in any other way. lie does not use the root end, as that invariably grows potatoes later by ten or twelve days than those which grow from the se ed end. The cuttings are sliced off with only one eye in each, in wedge shaped pieces. He th en recommends that the cuttings be dusted with lime, which aids in healing the cut, and in starting the bud to grow. Potatoe seed when thu3 treated should not be put in the dark,, as this treatment apt to make the sprout3 weak. Mr. H. recommends the Prince Albert as 'the variety.'
To detect Dampness in Beds. First, have bed well warmed with ä warming pan; then, the moment the pan is taken out, introduce between the sheets an inverted glass tumbler. After it has remained there a few minutes, withdraw it. If the glass is found dry, you may go to bed without any apprehension of chill or rheumatism. If the glass is covered with drops of wet or damp steam, the safest plan is to take oil the sheets and sleep between the blankets, as a second pair would probably be no better than the first. A recent number of an ajmculstaoie, oe wen sponged witn a decoction of laurel leaves, about the head, loins, etc., it would be a preventative to his being stung and annoyed with horse flies. The decoction is made by boiling the leaves in water for a considerable time. The more leaves used the better it will be. The decoction should be carefully put away, as it is highly poisonous. Our attention is also directed to a statement that a French agriculturalist made the discovery that a decoction of the leaves of the walnut tree, ap plied to horses and other annuals as a wash, will be fotmd a ,, . , ,.t . piete protection against tne sting of insects. A GENTLEMAN Who, two years ago, lay npon what his physicians and all his friends believed to be his death bed, is now alive and in the full vigor of health. The circumstances which led to his recovery were as follows: His younger brother was in Me n&uit OI reauing iu mm nuui uwu about the house to while away his weary hours. One dav he read to him from an old book published in London about the middle of the seventeenth century, of what was styled MA sympel and certain rcmmeedeefordiseasesofyeLungs." Not wholly without hone, and unwilling to leave anything un tried which gave promise of relief, the sick and dvinff man had the prescribed remedies prepared and commenced its use. The result was favorable. Grateful towards an all-wise providence for his restoration, he prescribed it for all in his vicinity who were afflicted with diseases of the längs and general debility, and in erery case it ha proved effective.
