Packard & Evans; and are glad to report it in a highly prosperous condition. The establishment and permanency of this institution in Laporte, is now settled beyond contingency. Its success, so far, surpasses the fondest anticipations of its founders. They have in attendance, already, about sixty students, and are having weekly accessions to their numbers. Their building, though not the best, is passably commodious and convenient, and quite well supplied with recitation and study rooms. In a word, they are well prepared to give any who may desire it, a thorough education in the several branches taught. Are there not tome young gentlemen, or even young ladies, in this vicinity desirous of taking a course of study? If so, we can recommend them to this Institution. JCSrWe learn that W. J. Walker, Esq., is now in New York, negotiating for the completion of the Cincinnati, Peru & Chicago Rail Road. We hope son to be able to inform cur readers of something definite in the matter. Mr. Walker i3 determined to see the road completed; and we trust he will have the hearty co-operation of all persons interested. JJ3TWe have received from Pettengill & Co., of New York, an advertisement, being a portion of a long story which is to appear in one of the New York weaHies; but as we do not intend publishing any advertisement of its length in our columns devoted to reading matter, .we decline its publication. If Pettengill fe Co. will send us advertisements to be inserted in our advertising columns, we will publish them at fair and equitable rates. . pub's. During a recent visit at Laporte, we dropt into the Times office, and spent a social hour. with the Col. He was looking well, and seemed' in the best of spirits. Wa fouud him in the social, as we had hitherto known hira in the political life a perfect gonüeman. - A more able and sterling son of Democracy W9 have not in this Congressional district than Col. John C. Walker. The Fife Company had another parade on Saturday last, which wound up with a challenge to an equal number of citizens 32, to a game of ball, on the public square. Il came off with a good deal ofexcitement, and was well played - by both parties; but the citizens bore off the palm. , ' High. Denni3 is getting up a Livery equipage complete; when he will be glad to take all his friends, who may desire it, on a little ride, lie is getting some good team s and carriages. ' - ' -
