The Pioneers.
T KlgS .M. LOC1SA SOCTHWICK. They came to the West when the forest stood - Might j, aid solemn, and grand; And built their homes in the shade of the wood, That cover our western lind. -When the blue wide waters, crjstal clear, . : Flowed onward swift and free. As the unchained love of the pioneer Gushed forth for liberty. And the holy stars had watched at night, While the still winged hours passed by; While the old years died in their garments white, - Recorded alone on h?ih ' 0 - Long, long bad the secrets lain concealed, Which the dim weird forest knew; But its hidden wealth was to be rsrealed, And the ti asure open to view. Where the rlorioua sunlight never fell Through the thick-wrought ecreen of leaves, They cleared broad meadows, and seed the dell, And bound in the sun their sheaves. They planted the maize in the rich brown soil, Which the Indian left in nod; And when the harvest repaid their toil, Their thanks went up to God. On the shadowy hillside grazed the herds, In pastures emerald green; And the bright are rang with songs of bird:?, Where the wigwam once had been. ite voice ot childhood, gleesorae, sweet, Floated upen the tide; And mints were made of the little feet. His banner trailed through glen and field, And his torch flaraed afar, O'er the daring white who would not yield, And the chieftain trained to war. There were drooping sisters, captive bound, And brothers burned at the ptake; And mothers were lying upon the ground In the sleep that none can break. Wives bent in anguish above their dead, And the maiden on her breast Pillowed her lover's fainting head. And the weary soothed to rest. TJjere tombs were made by ttghlng streams, And in the sunbriht glide; But never a lofty monument gleams Where their cold forms arc laid. Though many died as herof s fall, They found no burial brave, And the flower-gemmed sward was the only pall That rrwVirrTir?f'1 Tin r,innn'a ott-a - " V J WMr I S7 In Siberia, t!ie greatest luxuriös are raw cat3 served up in bear's oil; wliila in Japan a stewed crocodile, flanked with raon--key's feet, is the height of 'fat things.
