A hearty welcome does the Atlantic Monthly receive at our table. The March No. is before us. and fully sustains the high character ef this Monthly, lis contents are The Catacombs of Rome; The Nest; Ellen Jackson; Amours De Voyage; A Welsh Musical Festival; Cornucopia; My Journal to my Cousin Mary; Thy Psyche; Dr. Wichern and his Pupils; Beauty; The Grindwell Governing Machine; Saints, and their Bodies; By the Dead, Aaron Burr; The Autocrat of the Breakfast-table; Childlife by the Ganges; Music; Luerary Notices. All should send foi this Monthly, who wih to patronize the enterprise of American letters. The La Porte Times has changed hands. In the last No. Dr. Everts gives us a clever little valedictory, in which he announces that his editorial charg-4 closes with that paper, and that hereafter it will be under the management of Col. John C. Walker, its original editor and proprietor. We regret to lose from the "Guild," in Northern Indiana, so able and elegant a writer as the Doctor, but trust he will again resume those labors which he confesses are congenial to his tastes. The pen of gerius should not long remain silert. Col. Walker is too well known in Northern Ind-ana, to need notice from our pen. The Times will lose nothing from its report uner his direction, and, in respect to its poli:ical issueJ, will certainly take one st in advance. i-We lay th able letter of the Hon. Geo. Bancroft oa Kansas affairs, before our readers this week, not because it contains anv new principles than those which have before ben frequently laid before ihe public in opposition to the Lecompton Constiiuvion, but because it con ains the sum and subsiance of the whole in a clear and succinct argument in the chaste and elegant lanua;:e of that tminent author. Ti;oST?ECTTJS O? THE INDIANA STATE SENTINEL. The intention of the rrorrietorsof the Sentinel to make it iu all respects a newspaper worthy the support of the Democracy of Indiana. And in the proportion its circulation is increased and its ad--ertbing patronage enlarged will be our ability to add to its interest. Having no local agents, we depend entirely upon the efforts of our political friends to extend its circulation. In no cheaper or more elTectual way can political intelligence beeir dilated, zeal excited and party organization preserved, than through the medium of the press. All, then, who are desirous of the Democratic principles and policy, can serve the cause in no better th in in extending the circulation of the political organs ot the party. The year, upon which we have cnte-ed, will doubtless be one of important events. Upon all nutters of public interest we shall give lull and reliable intelligence. An iiaportant State election occurs next October. A nw Legislature, members of Congress, Supreme Judg s, and most of the State officers are tobe elected. It is only by sleepless vigilance and untiring 'ffort that we can expect to maintain th supremacy of the Democratic party. It behooves every Democrat, then, to inform himself upon the issues of the day which it will be the object of the Sentinel fathfully to present, and thus be prepared for the conflict. The Sentinel will be governed in its political course by the authoritatively expressed eentimcnt3 of the party. The principle and policy it promulgates it will be cur aim to advocate and defend, believing that upon the integrity of the Democratic party rest the preservation of our unequaled Government. It will represent the Democratic party of Indiana; not cliques, factions or men. It will be impartial towards all can-iidatca for public position, and its representative men, and it will be our object to elect and sustain. The Sentinel will pay especial attention to commercial news, the agricultural interests of the State and 11 miscellaneous intelligence. We have made arrangements for the news by telegraph as full as the Cincinnati papers. This will add largely to our expenses, for which we hope to be remunerated by an increased circulation. We will, also, send the Daily by express to all the principal points in the State. Terms: Strictly in advance.
