THE DEMO CHAT.
II. A. 0. PACKARD, :::::: Editor. PLYMOUTH, THURSDAY, December - - - - ttd, 1S7. Is War Inevitable? So it seems. A few of the "lost Tribe of Benjnmiri" have thrown down the glove to Uncle Sam, and he has no other alternative but to fight a business he iVnever loth to engage in on all proper occasions. But, aside from jesting, the Mormon difficulty would really eeem to be assuming the attitude of war. They have gone so far as to opealy avow their intentions of defending, to the uttermost, the approach of U. S. troops. For ourselves, we are glad to see this crisis in Mormonisrn. It is what we have long lookod for, and long desired. We see now a way of easily lidding our selves of this poligamous people, who, with i theenfines of our cl.ri.tiu, country. ..... ... i

This authority gave a coloring to his acts, and seemed to close every avenue through : which we might reach their barbarous pr?.c- j tices. ! For the last tcn- ; tj-five years we have trusted oflPcials of the Gov ernment, from constables a?d justice, to judc-, governors and president?, only to bet-corned, held in derision, insulted and betraved. Our houses have been plundered and then burned, our fi -Ids I laid waate, our i rincipal men butchered while tin-; 4er pledged faith of the Government for their Fafe-1 ty, and our families driven from their homes to find eheltcr in the barren wilderness and that projection among hostil eaviges which were denied them in the boasted abodes of Christianity and civilization. J The Con.titution of our common country guar antees unto ua all that wc do now or ever have claimed. If the coiidtitutional rights which per tain to us as American citizens were extended to Utah according to the Rpirit and meaning thereof, Jind fairly and impartially administered, il U all that we could ask all that wc have ever asked. Our pponeutä have n vailed themselves of prejudice, existing against us, bt cause of our religious faith, to send out a formidabl I host to accomplish our destruction. Wc have had no privileges or opportunity of defending ourselves from the false, foul and unjust aspersions against us before the na tion. The Government has not condescended to MnM an inTcstimtins committee or other nerton to be sent to inquire into and ascertain the truth, M is customary in Puch cases. We know these as perVions to be false; but that araila us nothing. We are condemned unheard, and forced to an issue with an armed mcrccrnary mob, which has been sent against us at the instance of anonymous letter writers, ashamed to father the base, slanderous falsehoods which they have given to the public of corrupt official., who have brought false accusations against us to screen themselves in their own infamy, and of hireling priests and howling edit on. who prwütu? the truth for lilthy here's skc.
The i-uc which has thus been forced upon us compels us to resort to the great fiit law of selfpreservation, ami stand in our own defence a right guaranteed unto us by the genius of the institutions of our own country, and upon which the government is h.iscd. Our duty to ourselves, to our families, requires us not to tamely submit and be driven and slain without an attempt to preserre ourselves. Our duty to our country, our holy religion, our God, to freedom and liberty, requires that we should not quietly stand still and sec those fetters forging nrov.nd ua which are calculated to enslave and bring us in subjection to an unlawful military despotism, such as can only emanate in a countty of constitutional law, from usurpation, tyranny and oppression.
