Surgical. Dr. Visall; of this place, Horacepathic physician, aided by Dr. Loomis, of LaPorie .performed An operation upon G. C. Laws6x, of this county, last Monday, which has made no little talk. Many years since, Lawson had trio thigh-bone brotei just above the knee, and it adhered with the bonis considerably lapped. . Last winter , never united, and he had no uso of the ecj, although there were no external ymp toms of injnry. except a crooked leg, from the lap of the bones. Dr. V. cut open the leg, and took ofT a small portion of the bone, set it in a proper manner, and so far Mr. Lawson isdoinj well. On reaching the bone, the deposition of osseous matter had proceeded until the end of the lower piece of th.i bone had increased nearly one inch ia length, whilo on the end of tha upper portion, the deposit had formed on the under side, and a strong cartilagenous formation with the muscles had 'taken place We are no surgeon, and know but little about it; but we were present and saw the operation. No efTc-ct conlJ le produced upon Mr. Litvson by chloroform or ether, and af.er several long ard ineffectual efforts to get him under its influence, he was operate J on without it, and bore it like .a man of true courage, a9 he is. Dr. Vinall performed the operation. He was cool, and seemed to work handy and as gently as it was possible to do. He made no false motions, no mangling or hagüng -every motion was at the right place, in the right time, and accomplished what was intended without a second effort. So ixx as we are able to judge, it was done up in a skillful, workmanlike manner, and w:th as little pain to the subject as could b. expected. Dr. V. not being known a3 a Surgeon, and being a Homoepathist, of course a vast deal is said, and persons who know nothing of of him, or the operation, express an opinion as ready as it is absurd, and utter stateivunts for tacts, as uncalled for as they are untrue. For instance that he tore off the end of an artery several times in attempting to take it up and tie it. That "he cut several gashes hap-hazard, and mangled the leg horribly, &c, rc. we know it to be all false. There was no gashes made. The incision was made to the spot, and with one stroke of the knife; and every other motion seemed to be easily and properly done. We know nothinij of Dr. V's merits as a Surgeon, nor the propriety of his operation; but we do know that in this thing he has been miserably misrepresented, and that envy and slander have all the say, without knowing anything about it. Give hon or to whom honor is due, don't be so big oted as to suppose the prejudice of ages precludes the acquisition of kill by every one unles3 the victim of that prejudice. jtSrWe welcome all persons who come here to engage in the mercantile business, but we do not think our ckizona shou.d forget their old friends, and we know of none more worthy of patronage than Messrs Cleveland & Hewett, whose advertisement appears in to-day's paper. Their stock 13 unsupassed in this market for variety and quality, and their well-deserved reputation j for (air dealing will insure for them an increase in their already extensive sales. Dry Goods, Groceries, Hardware. GI;iss, dec, are found in cheap profusion in their assortment. They have lately received a new supply, and anticipate a "good trade;" those wishing to select from a fresh stock are notified .to call soon. ' -11 11 jETThe M. C. Republican of this Tveek again demands the proof of uu- charge, that the Republicans offered Mr. O'Harra S50 for his vote and influence at the late election. Mr. O'Harsa called on us on Friday, June 6, 1057, and told us thst: "Just before the election took place, Charley Burch ofiered me 059 fqx my influence rit the polls on the day o? the elcctidMr the Republican party. I told him I vcnld not sell my principles for fifty dollars nor for a hundred dol'ar and that money could not buy them." . . These are as near the vrords ofIr. O'll. a3 we i could write er.t down while fresh in our mind. We publish the above at Mr O'H.'s request, and he says he will stand to the . truth of tho statement. We make the charge, in accordance with Mr. O'H's statement, and request the Republican to publish his proof that our cuarge 13 false. 1 ft is time the Ruffians were taught by the law of lex talionis. ," Pizerinctum I mtitutc '. : ; . "The Sun went down with a llood-red flame, And the sky grew cloudy and black, And the tumbling billows like hop-frogs came, - . . Each over the other's back." Another Poet has given "vent to' his feelinks" in the following lines, on hoops: "Roll on, ye monstrous whalebone hoops roll on!
