THE DEMOCRAT.
T. McDCrALD Editor. PLYMOUTH, IND. Thursday Morning Jnlv 9th, 1857. Extra Session. Wo have noticed in seYeral Republican papers '.hat Governor Willard would probably call an extra session of tbe Legislature gome tirns in August next. If tho Governor has become satisfied that tho same disgraceful scenes would not be re-enacted that were last winter, he would no doubt convene the Legislature at an early day; but unless he has some intimations from those who prevented the general approprition, temperance, and revenue bills from passing, that they will, if called together, at once proceed to pass those laws, he will not call an extra esswa this year. Tt is well known by all who are conversant with the doings of the Senate, the last week of the session, that the Republicans utterly refused to let those bills pass, although repeatedly urged by the Democrats to do so; but their motto was to "rule or ruin." They, no doubt, were of tho opinion that tho Governor would call them together immediately after the adjournment, or at no distant day; but in this calculation they ware sadly mistaken. The evils which have been brought about in consequence of thogo bills not being passed, are justly attributable to the leaders of the Republican party, and they have the responsibility to shoulder. Kansas. The election for Delegates ta frame a Constitution for Kansas is over and the Abolitionists, true to the dictates of Grcely and othr eastern politicians, refused to vote. Tho consequence is, that all the Delegates were euher State Democrats or Pro-slavery men. Wc are not posted as to how they are divided. One thing to our mind is certain, that the Republicans are anxious that Kansas should frame a Constitution tolerating slavery. Thcirentire stock in trade is in the slavery question, and they are determined, if possible, to establish and perpetuate slavery in Kansas, for a year or two at least, in order to benefit a few land speculators, and to provide a little capital to operate with when they bring Mr. Seward on the track in the next race for President. All acknowledge that a large majority of the Voters in Kansas are opposed to slavery, and the Free Slate men could have elected a majority of the Delegates without any difficulty, had they been so dispcf.cd. Should Kansas b? admitted ae a slave State, tl.d Republicans exert themedves to have the- Constitution aUered? 5?Wc notice thai R. Lowry is favorably epoken of as the proper person to nominate as the Democratic candidate lor Con grcs3 in the tenth District. Tho result of the election ia that District will be looked for with great anxiety by all partias. If ut recollection is correct, Mr. Lowrv was only beaten soma 330 votes, by Mr. Brenton. If the Democrats brin out the xvAw man, and all work harmoniously together, and prevent the Republicans from importing votes, tin Democrat iß nominee will stand a ood ch.vic-j to be elected. Religion IVoticc. Rev. Mr. Gregory (Episcopalian) will preach at tho Presbyterian Church, nex: Monday at 4 o'clock P. M. Te publicare respectfully invited to attund. X2rTho steamship Montreal was destroyed by fire on the 28th ult. on tho river St. Lawrence. There were about 500 passengers aboard, mostly Scotch emigrants. Only about 150 were saved. dTTa prospect for a tolerable Wheat crop has brought Flour down, in this market, from 84,50 to 83,50 $ cwt 37B& on the Tccumseh Bank are regarded as very unsafe, better not touch 'em. XTVe are looking every day for the laws enacted by our legislature last winter. We learnt from the State Sentinel that they would be ready for distribution about the 15th ult. 5TGov. Wright will partake of a complimentary supper on the evening of the 13th inst., gotten up by the cit:zensof Indianapolis. He will leaTe the next day for New York, where he will take a steamer for his far-off home. His palary is 812,OOO year. 'Our neighbor claims to print a reliable paper, and our neighbor is an honorable man." M. C. Rep. Thank you for the compliment, but are orry we cannot return it. Arrival of Ihe Niagara. Halifax, June 29. Tho steamship Niagara, from Liverpool on the 20th inst., arrived hero at 8.20 this evening. Her dates are three days later than those already received. Tho royal Mail steamship Niagara sailed from here at 10 P. Mi, for Boston, where she will bo due at an early hour Wednesday morning. There lad Wn a spirited discussion in
the House of Commons in regard to the destruction of Grevtown. Lord Hamilton inquired if tho government had demanded reparation for tho British property destroyed. Lord Palmerston replied that it had not, the law officers of the Crown having given the opinion that the demand could not be sustained. A discussion ensued, in which Messrs. Disraeli, Roebuck and others denounced the outrage a3 an insult to the flag of Great Biitain. Lord John Russell and others defended the government, and the subject was dropped. The number of tho British cruisers on the coast of Cuba will sooa bo greatly inCreased. The Cotton Supply Association had held another meeting at Hey wood. The attendance was large, and tho proceedings were in effect the same as at previous meet
ings. The Bank of England, on Tuesdav, re duced its rates of inteiest to 6 per cent, both for discount and loans, but the movement created only a very slight rise in the funds. The discount houses also lowered their rates. The London Times publishes an article on Gen. "Walker's career in Nicaragua, in which it call3 upon the United States government not to tolerate such brigandage, but to wait patiently until time adds the Central American States to the Union. The alterations in tho fiigate Niagara were expected to be completed by Saturday, the 2Jth, on which day she would leave Portsmouth fur Liverpool, to forthwith commence shipping the submarin cable. The officers of the Niagara were being hospitably entertained by the naval authorities of Portsmouth. The weather in England continued very fine, and the crops were in a promising condition. FRANCE. The election canvass continued very animated, but presented no new feature. The Democratic party was still divided, and likely to continue so. It was supposed that none of their candidates, if elected, would take the oath to the government, although their organs refused to give any satisfaction in the matter. The Seicle had received a third warning for an article in favor of the Democratic candidate. jtifThe Republican of last week seerns to be troubled because we have been silent on the Minnesota election, for the last two weeks. The probability is, that the Republicans have elected a ninjuiy of the Delegates, but this is not absolutely cer tain; be that as it may, we will noiify our ; readers of the fact when we receive the official return. We would remark in this connection that we never stated that Minnesota had gone for our party. It matters but little which party have the majority, except oi one poin!.' if the Republicans lnve the majority, ft clause will, n? doubt, be inserted in the Cunstituti-jn allowing the Xe:jra equal rights with the white man; il they hive not a majority, tho Consiuiuion will contain no such provision. Six Hundred Soldiers and Teamsters Killed by the Indians. St. Louis, July 7. The St. Joseph's Journal of the 2nd inst., publishes a report brought by a French trader, that 100 troops and 500 teamsters under command of Col. Sumner, were attacked by a large body of Cheyennes and Amploe [sic] Indians, 200 miles west of Fort Kearney. All ire re slain. The report is confirmed by a trader arriving from Pacific City, Iowa, and also by an emigrant train from Salt Lake. The Salt Lake mail arrived Independence on the 30th. But few Indians were seen on the route. The emigrant trains were doing well. The snow had all disappeared. Grass and water were abundant on the plains. ———<>——— The Mormons are anxious to know the character of the reports rnaJe by the returned officials, and wire surprised at the bills respecting polygamy before Congress. They treat Surveyor Burr's report with contempt, and accuse him of making false statements regarding the country. Fate or the Captive Women. No reliable informal ion, so far as wc can learn, has been received from tho Indians, sent out by agent Flandreau, for tlie rescue of the two captive women ; but we are pained to announce, that we have information concerning the womn they wvre sent alter, which i apparently reliable; and which conveys the appalling intelligence, that Mrs. Noble had been murdered, and that Miss Gardner had been put up on the side of a hill as a target for the shots of the murderous fiends, the lcsultcf which was that both her legs were broken, and in that
condidon was left to die. Fortunately, some strolling Yankton Indians discovered her, and removed her to tho Mission Station on Yellow Medicine, where she is now receiving all the care possible; and as soon as convenient, will be brought to this city. The information conveved above ccmes through E. E. Paulding, Esq., of St. Peter, who returned last Thursday, from a trip to Redwood; and who feels satisfied in nis own mind f i.s truth. To Destrot Flies. To one pint of milk add a quarteruf a pound of raw sugar and two ounces of ground pepper; simmer them togeiher for eight or ten minutes and place it about in shallow dishes. The flies attack it greedily, and in i few moments are suffocated. By this method, kiichens, etc., may be kept clear of flies all summer, without the danger attending poison. The Trenton (N. J.) Gazette says that a woman residing in Ocean county, N. J., was fii'htened tj death last week bv the idea of the Comet. At ni 'ht she saw a light from a large fire in the pines and was immediately possessed with the idea that it was the comet that the earth was on fire and about to bo destroyed. Her alarm was so irreal that she was thrown into convulsions, from the effects of which she died the same ni 'lit. A Man Siusj to death dy Ikus. While a faimer named jI:ys, icbiding near Knokvilio, in Frederick county, .M, was about to hive a swarm of becs, a great, portion of them swarmed up on his head, and stun him in such a terrible manner that ho died on the following day. A Dandy. A specimen of tho human family that passes for a man among women and a woman among men. Look out for bogus 'quarters' and bogus cents imitations of tho new. The War in Oregon. The Oregonlan of May 16.lt learns by private letters and information derived from persons recently from the Dalles, that the Indian war had commenced at the North. It was reported i that a detachment cf regulars, under command of an officer of the regular army, had a fiuht wi.h the Indians n tho WallaWalla countv. Two regulars wero killed and six wounded; the Indians lost twelve killed tho founded were borne off. ZSCrThe Government is said to have concluded to 6end tho California overland mails by tho San Antonia and Gila, or 'extreme southern route. tST'Gov. Izard has issued a proclamation for an election for delegate to Congress, Temtoiial and county officers, ia Nebraska, to bo held the first Monday in August. It is said that a wreath of walnut leaves in a room will prevent the approach of thoso troublesome insects, flics. Try it. 3rHon. Robert Dale Owen, Minister at Court Naples, in a letter to Hamilton Smith, Esq., says he has sent Iiis resignation to the President, and will be homo in the fall. Sxow in June. Lt it go upon the record a3 a part of the history of this extra ordinary season, that tho snow fell last night in sufficient quantity to be observed on the sidewalk by early risers, this mor ning. This, for tho 23d day of June, is the crowning act of tho long series of weather atrocities to which we have sub mitted. Oswego Times. Judge James Borden, of Fort Wayne has been appointed Commissioner of the United States to the Sandwich Islands. ——>An overland emigrant train to California, was attacked by a band of Sioux Indians about a hundred miles west of Fort Karney [sic], who murdered every person in it, numbering about twenty.
jtSrWilliam A. Morrison has been appointed by the Governor to bo Adjutant General of the state of Indiana, from and after the date of his commission. JCSTTho importation of Tea into the United Slates has declined sixteen millions of pounds the past twelve months upon the amount received the previous year. Great Iron Bridge. A Bridge is now being constructed over the "River Jordan" on the line of tho Catasauinia and Fogies ville Railroad, in Pennsylvania, which is said to be the largest of its kind in the U. S. It is 1,100 feet long, and is buile entirely of iron the spar.s being supported by iron towers one hundred feet high. It will be completed by the first of July. jThe Democratic State Convention which met at Jackson, Miss., j-esterday. nominated Col. Wm. II. McWillic for governor. Armt Worm. Great complaints are being made in the different p rts of the Slate about the sudden appearance cf this insect and its ravages. Killed Br Lightning. Mrs. Ellen Harrison, a resident of McConnelsville, Ohb, was killed by lightning in Perry county, whither she was on a visit, on Saturday last.
The Governorship of Utah. ——— In alluding to the recent excellent appointment of Col. Cummins to the Governorship of Utah, the Louisville Journal, usually the most bitter opponent of everything Democratic, uses the following complimentary language: We have both from the political friends and opponents of Col. Cummins, who has just been appointed Gov. of Uiah, the most flattering accounts concerning his ability and energy. He is a gentleman of the exact type of character best suited to that most responsible post. Conversant with all the phases of life, and experienced in every degree cf fortune, he is admirnply [sic] adapted to exercercise [sic] executive functions in the territory to which he has been appointed. Col Cummins was at one time an extensive merchant in Augusta Georgia, but failed. Removing to St. Louis he established himself as settler [sic] to the forces stationed at Jefferson Barracks. To Gen. Pierce he owes his first federal appointment that of Indian Agent. Great confidence is expressed in the ability and wisdom with which he will manage the delicate and important trusts Commissioned to him. ======= Mew Advertisements.
