They are only attempts to steal our lightning they are all false and fuithirmore, they are not true, and worse than all, are calculated to deceive. OILY BUTTER, General Western Puffer and Gas Blower. Chief Justice Taney and Slavery. However opinions may vary as to tho recent decision of tho Supreme Court in the Dnd Scott case, theib can be but one view of tho wholesale abuse heaped upon Chief Justice Taney personally by the Republican prints. Tho Cinci'inati Enquirer answers the charge that Mr. Taney is a large slaveholder, as fallows : Let the decision speak for itself ; but Mr. Taney, personally, is opposed to slavery, in principle and practice. Forty years ago, although never wealthy, ho freed every negro in his possession, and has paid servants wages ever since. They were 11 valuable, and or.o, his bodv servant, has been th head waiter of the largest hotel, in Baltimore (or many years. Judge Taney has always been the truest friend to tho black man, and it is related by a cotemporary that the most eloquent speecn he ever made wa3 at the Frederick county Bar, in defence of a little ngro girl, in which ho thrilled his auditors bv exalting the happy construction of our courts and the justice of our laws in allowing the business of the circuit to be Stopped, in order to give that poor little negro her rights and her lawful protection. And although th lialu creature had most likely committed crime, Mr. Taney's eloquent appeal rescued her from the vengance of tho law. Thus have all his acts, public and private, been characterized by ju8ttc3 and generosity. jLottcry Prizes. A new illustration of the sensible belief that Lottery Prizes aro lad money, which always brings a cure instead of a blessing with it, u given bj the recent de.ath of Mr. Calrert in England in great poverty. Ibis Mr. Calvert ws tixty-ono at the time .f his death, drew the tirst prize of 8100,000 err drawn in the English Lottery, and afterwards drew a 8t5,0UU prize also. But these large fcums could not save him from A death of poverty on the contrary, probably were tho direct or indirect causoa of tue! a death. Unscrupulous men often ay, let us have monny, that is all we ask even if not acquired by strictly just and Christian means. But the gold that comes as the reeult of crime, or extortion, or gambling of any kind, only rivets firmly upon tbo soul the particular vice through whoa'i service it has been acquired. It is in fact, the money consideration which passes between tho man who sells bis soul, and the Evil Power which purchases it and which thus gains the full force of a rontraet, as th old legends lav ;t, ma le wi h the Evil One, and signed with the heart's red blood. Let every man, therefore, who would live a hippy Iifj, ard see jwl tiys, avo'J 01 Pry.
