D. McDONALD, Editor. PLYMOUTH, INDIANA, APRIL 23d, 1857. Scandalum Magnatum. The election on Monday last, for township officers, resulted, as usual, in favor of the Democracy. The entire democratic ticket was elected by a majority of about one hundred and seventeen! The snow fell without any cessation until dark, which may be the reason of so small a majority. Had th weather been pleasant, there is no telling how much our majority would have been! Marshall Co. Democrat. yes Sir And we know of a certain Town that has a large majority, that is over-run with doggeries and rum-holes. Where the "Lccal" leader of the weekly paper is out against card playing by the boys of the place. Where the County Clerk peddles Naturalization papers along the rail-road line, where the Records of the County are altered to suit the convenience of the parties; where they attempt to rob the county Treasury, and the Post Office J is robbed and part of the mail destroyed; where unnaturalized foregners, and drunken bullies vote en masse, and the whole business part of town is laid in ashes by the torch of the incendiary." The above scurrilous, libelous, blackguard, and uncalled for article is taken from the Northern Indianiun, a paper published at Warsaw. The name of George B. Thralls appears in the paper as tho editor, but we are loth to believe that he wrote it. He is a man of some means, and keeps a drug-store in Warsaw, and a dirty back shop, where he peddles out liquor by the drink; therefore he would not be likely to say anything about "rum-holes. He lives in a town so infernal poor that thieves could find nothing to steal but rats if they should set it on fire; and he knowing it. would say nothing about "incendiaries." As he never seen our county Clerk, (and is too stingy to dress decent) we suppose he would have too much sense to charge him with crime in aischanrinrr the duties of his office; for he loves money too well to run the risk of a prosecution for libel. As the board of election here has been Rejwllican, we take it f.jr granted that he does not intend to charge that they permitted "unnaturalized foreigners and drunken bullies to vote en masse.'1 So we have charity to think that Mr. Thralls did not write the article quoted. If the writor whosoever h is means this place by "a certain town which lie knows," all that we have to say is, that he is no gentleman, is unworthy the name of an editor, disgraces his position, has published a scandalous malicious libel, given utterance to a foul-mouthed, wholesale, un qualified lie, and knew it ichen he xcroteand puhlished it; and wo are sorry that such things y'vlept "men" will be tolerated, even in such a place as IVarsaic. New the town is all well enough, but such newspapers as she has had published and such language a3 has filled them would disgrace tho veriest broth ;1 blackguard living; and in tlu very para- fo belaboring a certain town' i an editorial charging some "citizen and fither," resident there with an act worse than "incendiarism." Shame on you ye hypocrites! You that suffer your political prejudices to urge yon to utter wholesale slanders and publish wholesale libels about your neighbors! You whose citizens are deserting your town and locating themselves amongst those neighbors! You who would dictate to your neighbor his every act, and crush him for disobedience if you had the power! For shame on you! The "rum holes and doggeries" here are scarce compared with Warsaw. No "County clerk peddles naturalization papers" on the Rail -road line or elsewhere. No "records of the county are altered to suit the convenience of parties;" and if the cowardly liar who writes such a charge will openly male it, and name the parlies, it it h true they shrill be punished; and ifi false, he can have the privilege of footin" ! a Judgement in a libel suit. No ono but a coirard mud liar will charge .1 crime unless he knows it is so and he can prove it; and then he charts it home where it belongs on tho guilty parties. Xo honest decent man flings such a charge at a whole town. The robbery of tho county Treasury, Post Office are no reproach to the town. Every town in the world has thievos in it and such a charge on this place alone i only in keeping with so foul a slander as tho balance of the article we have quoted. Look at tho county Record at Warsaw, and seo the actions of crim con, and the Judgments of from 83,000 to 86,000 against some of her most respectable (?) citizens Republicans too followed b the usual degredation on the one side, and desolation on tho other, with tho morals of tho whole community contaminated by its discussion or influence. Look at her polluted ballot boxefl, closed to legal voters and open to illegal ones, that were Republican. B ih! She to talk about decency, morality, honor awl righteousness ! But we aro foolish to suppose that decency and truth could be expected from a paper that advocates a dissolution of the Union, and would place a community or nation of brutal negroes above the white race, and are ready to resort to any means to accomplish it, from petty lying, through the the grades of blackguardism down to a theftof the negroes themselresand theraur-
tiering of white men who oppose them in their nefarious designs and attempts. - Pah! "Let's put some Camphor in our ink" and write about something and somebody within the reach of truth and decency; for such men are not.
JfSTFor the benefit of our readers in Marshall, we would say that Mr. Hasler, Ambrotype and Melainotypo Artist, has located here for a short time; and having seen a number of his pictures, we have no hesitancy in recommending him to the public as one of the best artists that has ever been in our place. Those wishing a good likeness of themselves or friends can not do better than to call at his Car, South of Edwards' Hotel, where he will be pleased to wait on all who may favor him with a call. A. Whitmore will deliver an address on Thursday (this)eve. in the Seminary, on the art of chirography, and we hope our citizens will turn out to hear him as we are fully persuaded that they will not regret it, especially after seeing some specimens that we had the pleasuie of examining they are most assuredly very well executed. Ä?AVe welcome to our table the Fort Wayne Times. Bro. Dawson is a bold clear writer and not afraid, or ashamed to do his duty; ve love an honest out-spoken Editor and who is not too cowardly to do what he believes to be right. John is a host himself. If any of our friends want a good paper from Ft. Wayne, we advise them to take the Fort Wayne Times. Xorthern Indianiun. You are a pretty specimen of an "honest, out-spoken editor" a "bold clear writer, and not affraid or ashamed to do your duty" and likewise "not too cowardly to to do what you know to be wrong" you are a host in yourself speaking after the manner of men and not "too cowardly to be ashamed to publish about your neighbors, unqualified V that ought to make Satan blush with shame. "Blush if honest blood a drop remains To steal its way along thy veins. Blus.li if the brcuze lunj; hardened on thy cheek Has left one spot whore that poor drop can ?Ieak." GODEV'S LADY'S BOOK, for May, is on our table, punctual as ever. If any of our subscribers wish a good Magazine, one that is always punctual, and contains the choicest literature, we would modestly hint, that Godey's is the one they are in search of. S3 per year.
