.Sam Pike, of tho Bloomingtoa Elag, has figured it up from tho most reliable statistics, that northern Illinois that por: tion of tho State which gives its ponderous Republican majorities furnishes tho human material 'herewith the penitentiary at Alton 13 populated. Of the prisoners iu that institution, 237 aro from the twelve Northern counties. . jCT'Within a year, sales and grants of public lands m the United States have been made to the extent of over 39,000,000 acres. This i3 equal in extent to one-third of the whole kingdom of France. Yet, notwithstanding the rapid disposal of the public lands, there remains yet undisposed cf an area c(jual to the whole thirty -one s'ies, or nearly as large as Europe, Russia excepted. - " When we read we fancy we "could be martyrs; when we come to act. wo find we cannot bear a provoking word. - 3T A wise man ought to hope for the best, be prepared for the worst, and bear with equanimity whatever may happen. j3T The veil which covers the face of futurity is woven by tho hand of mercy. Stealing never mads a mau rich, charity never mado a mm poor, and prayer never hinders business. A Short Sennen To Yorxo Men. Text: Owe no man anything. - Keep out of debt. Avoid it as you would war, pestilence and famine. Shun it as you would the devil. Hate it with a perfect hatred. Abhor it with an entire and absolute abhorrence. Dig potatoes, break stone, paddle tinware, do anything that is honeEt and useful, rather than run m debt. There is but little hope for the young! man who can recklessly wear the chain of j debt, and speak with an air of humorous pity of his creditors, a did that brazen youth, who on being asked how it was that he could sleep of nights, involved in debt as he was, replied that he could sleep -weit enougu imagine hoy himself, but ho could not his creditors could contrive lo do it. He who will incur debts, which he knows he iaa never pay, or neglect obligations which he has the means to meet, is but a thief in another form. Men live by their good3, and he who tikes them without pay, steals more than their value, for lie has also tl3 time and patience of , the owner. He has to a degree destroyed honest credit, and injured some poor customer, more deserviug aid than bins self. Debt is tho hardest of all task masters, the crudest of all oppressors. It is a mill stone about the neck; an incnbu3 on the heart; it spreads a cloud over the whole firmament of man's being, It furrows the forehead with premature wrinkles.it plucks out its sight; it drags all nobleness and kindness out of the port and bearing of a man. It take3 the eouI out cf his laugh, And all 6tateliness and freedom from his walk. Come not undor its f-icursed dominion. Pass by it as you would by a leper, or one smitten by a plague. Touch it not. Taste not of its fruits, for it will turn to bitterness and ashes on vour lips. Finally. I say to each and all, but especially to you, young men, keep out of debt. Philosophy or Wetting Bricks. Lime moitar acts as a bond with brick by adh)Bion, the -vehicle being-the moisture of water of the mortar. Dry porous brick at ence abstract the moisture from the raor tar, and it soon evaporate?; Ihu3 the bind ing vehicle between the two is removed. . Spring and fdl aro the best seasons of tho vear for baiJding brick houses. In warm dry weither the moisture of the moitar evaporates too rapidly; and in frosty weather it crystalizes, and when ' thawed it sweats out. Mortar becomes hard by absorbing caroonic acid from the atmos phere; and it acquires by age the character of stone. Without moisture it will not become hard and solid, but crumble into dust; hence the necessity of preventing the rapid evaporation of moisture in mortar used -in buildings of brick or stone.
