D. McDONALD, Editor. PLYMOUTH, INDIANA, MARCH, 26, 1857. Great destruction by Fire! On last Sunday morning, at about 1 o'clock, the most destructive fire broke out that has ever occurred in this county, or probably in Northern Indiana. The fire was first discovered in the rear of the building occupied, and formerly owned by, Robert Rusk. The alarm was given, and conveyed to all parts of the town; the city rushed to the scene of the conflagration, but the buildings, being composed of wood, and very dry, there was no hope left of saving the first block of buildings on the east side of Michigan street. Dry Goods, Groceries, Drugs, &c., were carried into the street, in front of the buildings; there being a strong wind from the south-east, the goods in the street caught fire, and were almost entirely consumed. The intense heat occasioned by the burning of an entire block of buildings, aided by the wind and the goods burning in the street, conveyed the fire to the west side, and the entire block on that side was entirely destroyed, with the exception of Mr. Corbin's residence, on the north part of the block, which was only saved by the most strenuous and persevering efforts. The origin of the fire has been assigned to various causes, but we have heard no better or more reasonable solution of the mystery than that it caught fire from some of the stoves or chimneys in the building. The citizens generally, and the ladies especially, deserve, and will receive, the everlasting gratitude of the sufferers and those who were in danger. We noticed many ladies on the ground from time the fire broke out until the flames had subsided; and also some few men (?) who refused to render them assistance, when almost exhausted. The loss in property and business, has been variously estimated at from $75,000 to $125,000. The loss occasioned by the suspension of business cannot be estimated; but it is enormous, considering that at least four-fifths of the business has been destroyed. We have used our best exertions to arrive at the amount of the loss in property, and the following is the result: A. L. Wheeler, building,................... S4,000 Brownlee & Shirley, dry goods, .........8,000 T. A. Lemon, drugs,........................... 2,500 A. C. Capron, law office,...................... 200 N. R. J. Burns, law office and books; N. McLaughlin, saloon; _____Ross, liquors; D. Burns, " H. Halverson, harness tools; J. Potter, harness; Eli McDaniel, household goods. We do not think the entire loss will fall much short of $70,000, as there were many valuable books and papers destroyed. Our town is now in ashes----desolation reigns supreme, and our once thriving and beautiful village presents a sorrowful appearance; but we trust that the energy and enterprise which has ever characterized the business men of this place, will impart to our town the cheerful appearance of former days. A friend of ours tells the following story which happened in the city of New York fiome years ago: A gentleman was walking np one of the business fctreets one day, and to satisfy bis curiosity, stepped into a dry goods store, and was astonished at the number and liveliness of the Clerks. Every one was in a Lurry, and seemed to have . more than he could do. After staying as long aj h wanted to, ne concluded to continue his observations, and stopping at the next door, he found one of the Clerks reading a yellow back Pamphlet, another asleep on the counter, and two in the back-yard pitching pennies.. It would hardly be necessary for us to state that the' owners of the establishment where the gentleman first entered, advertised, and the other did not. . . i r:- - i . In our notice of the losers from the tire on Saturday evening last, w neglected to state that the "Local" of tho Democrat, was smoug the unfortunate ones. Our Feather bed Trunk and contents Shawl a "Tip Top Mammoth Gold Pen," presented to us by Mr. J. Brownlee and a botile Jam full of ha:r Regenerator, which we had purchased on Saturday evening, with the last "smooth quarter" wo had, was consumed, in the store of Brownlee & Shirley Our loss will probably not exceed 830; and while we regret exceedingly, that we have had such a wonderful "streak of luck," we are thankful that our life was spared us, and at any time, will most. cheerfully return our "unfeigned thanks," to any one of our numerous sympathizers, who will replace tho bottle of Regeneratorl ii ii The other evening, we heard the following story told, which is the "latest edition" we have heard of "Pop goes the weasel." A child had been playing on the piano, one evening, and was told by its good Mother that as it was about bed time, it must "say its prayers." The child as all good children do, obeyed and said: "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul To keep, And if I d'e before I wake Pop goes the weasel! " The Republican's article of two weeks aro, in relation to ourself, failed to excite our "rising passions," to a sufficient degree to prompt a repTy. At some future time we may havo occasion to refer to the subject not with the expectation of divulging anything "startling," without a "handle" to it as the Republican has done, but "just for fun!"
