As far back as we have been able to learn, the Ligonier Volunteer Fire Department was organized by a few men, and equipment was composed of a ladder and some rubber buckets, and Charles Graham was elected chief and Buell Cowley was secretary, and they paid $lO.OO a month to belong. Then after a time, they got three two-wheeled hose carts, and they were stationed one on the north side, one on the south side and one in the central part. These were pulled by hand unless there happened to be someone close with a team, and if a team was used, the city paid $l.OO for the drive. Then Buell Cowley was elected chief and the City started paying the firemen $B.OO a year and they didn’t have to pay a poll tax. It was after the fire that burned the top off of the I. D. Straus home (for the lack of hose). The house had just been remodeled and redecorated.
