NN HE\ AL l H =7 NSy the / N\ N W\ INDIANA STATE MEDICAL / W ASSOCIATION / CARE OF FEET THE foot, the terminal organ of the leg, is a part of the body which works hard for us. [t is composed of 52 bones and 214 ligaments, and is subjected to tons of pressure from the more than eight miles a day most people walk.
With proper care, the feet give us perfect, painless servica. With. out care, they will lead us into poor posture, lack of pep, cramps, ringworm, athlete's foot, backache, sluggishness, headaches, and loss of time and earning power. More than 85 per cent of foot troubles come from faulty foot. wear. Shoes should be selected for the type of work to be done. When work is hazardous, safety shoes should be worn. For most occasions, low-heeled, all-leather shoes are needed. Shoes need firm soles and uppers for supple firmness and for proper ventila tion to reduce foot perspiration. Stockings and shoes should be at least half an Inch longer than the longest toe. . Feet should be thoroughly dried after bathing and toenails should be trimmed straight across, and not too ahort. Good posture should be cultivated and certain muscles of the feet should be exercised daily by wiggling the toes and walking a few steps on tiptoe. Corns, callouses, ringworm and more serious foot ailments can be prevented by proper care of the feet.
