A Column of Opinion .. .

OUR CITY PARKS ‘ The City Fathers have been busy this summer making our parks more enjoyable for youngsters and oldsters alike. The park at the cormer of Martin and 6th Sts. now has added playground equipment for the small children and improvements have been made at the City Park on Lincolnway West.

According to Mayor Hire, benches have been ordered for the City Hall Park, and soon more people can find comfort in addition to pleasure listening to the Wednesday evening band concerts. All such improvements spell more happiness to the general. public and that, in the humble opinion of this paper, is a very real part of the job of any city council. We hope the day is not too distant when an outdoor amphitheater can be completed at the tourist park for the natural possibilities are there and properly promoted would {mt be out of reach financial-| y: J If such ever did become a reality, Ligonier would stand at the top of the list in park development, and the people of the community would have a place of beauty and comfort to attend band concerts, entertainments and the like. Nothing is beyond the scope of realization if behind it is enthusiasm, hard work and cooperation.

WHAT WINS ELECTIONS Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine is a Republican. She wants to see the Repub-| lican Party in power in the nation. She calls the present Democratic a d min istration “ineffective.” ' But she adds:

“I don’t want to see the Republican Party ‘ride to a political victory on the four horsemen of calumny — fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear.” :

. All politicians do not have the high standards of Sen. Smith, yet we believe that the voters of both parties like to see victories won on constructive issues and by responsible statesmen. The voters are amazingly accomplished at separating the wheat from the chaff. When they are convinced by actions, and not- words, that the Republican Party will do a better job at Government than the Democratic Party, they will make a change. : _But propaganda and criticism are not enough. The The GOP has been relying on these since 1933 without success. 1 If the Republican Party had developed a constructive program of its own which met with public approval and fought for that program, it might not have been wandering in the wilderness for 17 long years. : | The record speaks louder than campaign oratory. Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, twice standard bearer of the Republican Party, can testify to this. : —Ft. Wayne Journal-Gazette — Whenever education and refinement grow away from the common people, they are growing toward selfishness, which is the monster evil of the world.—H .W. Beecher.

It is always good to know, even only in passing, charming human beings, it refreshes one like flowers and woods and clear brooks. — George Eliot. ) et The first rule of education, in all lands, is never to say anything offensive to anyone.—Voltaire.

Christian Science : 411 Lincolnway West - “Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?” is .the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on -Sunday, June 18. : : ~_The Golden Text is: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the: Word was fod. .. . All thinfis were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John lat 3). . i "Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: “Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it ? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof?” (Job 38:1,

4-6). i The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mari' Baker Eddy: “The finite must yield to the infinite. Advancing to a higher plane of action, thought rises from the material sense to the spiritual, from the scholastic to the inspirational, and from the mortal to the immortal. All things are created spiritually. Mind, not matter, is the creator” (p. 25C).
