A Column of Opinion . ..

THE CHURCH AND THE COMMUNITY Easter is the day most people try getting to Church. Certainly at Easter time we think more in terms of Christianity and the Church, and many of us make good resolves that somehow vanish with the passing of time. This week we read an article by a Rev. Raymond Manker of Toledo that impressed us considerably. We

print it herewith that youl too might find it~food f 01" thought. | What is the usual way of measuring the effectiveness of a Church? We look at the members of the church and see if they are living up to the ideals and the way of life that istaught by the church. However thjs is not always an effective measure. Some men live outwardly good lives while the motive behind the good life might be black as coal, and activities behind the scenes might rival an Al

Capone or a Dillinger. Is there delinquency in the community, either adult or juvenile? Delinquency among the adults is the cause of juvenile delinquency. If there are not enough playgrounds in the right places, if there is not enough wholesome recreation for the young people, the adults are delinquent in their duty to their community, to their fellow‘ men, and to their children. Are the adults good examples for their children? What is the divorce rate in the community? Certainly this is one way of measuring the effectiveness of a church. Every couple should be married by their minister. In this way they would have to have an interview with a pro-

fessionallyr trained person who can point out to them some of the causes. of marriages going on the rocks. Is there prejudice in the community ? Certainly this, too, is one way of measuring the effectiveness of a chureh. Is there hatred of the Catholics? Is there prejudice against the Jews? Are the Negroes confined to a Negro section? Is there restriction of any kind based on race, color or creed? If there is, the church has failed to be effective in the commanity. There is more to religion than going to church on Sunday. There is more to religion than living a good life personally. There is a plus factor in religion, and that is duty toward one’s fellowman. We nust demand for others that which we demand for ourselves.

FORETHOUGHT PAYS OFF Some 1,700 engineers and field men from the -capital stock fire insurance and casualty insurance companies are now engaged in a nationwide inspection project to prevent hospital disasters. The program is under the direction of the National Board of Fire Underwriters.

As of March 1, about 1,360 hospitals had been inspected for fire and other hazards. All in all, nearly 9,000 hospitals will be surveyed before the program is completed. The primary idea is to eliminate hazards to life. However, the scope of these inspections 2oes beyond that. It is hoped that one of the most lasting results will be improvements in the training of hospital personnel and an inecreased consciousness of fire hazards.

The American Hospital Association is co-operating with the insurance industry in this splendid work.: If every hospital follows the advice of the inspecting experts, the chance of disaster will be reduced to the minimum.
