A Column of Opinion . . .
WORLD IS MAKING PROGRESS
The world is making progress. We can see that .if we take the long view of things.
What some people regard as illness, is but the birth pains of a new era. ;
Around most of the world the yeast of freedom is at work. . - Colonialism and imperialism © a re ~disappearing faster than we think.
The greatest need of this century of swift -transportation is a sort of a world unity. Able minds are working on that. It began with the conferences at The Hague. It was followed by the League of Nations and the United Nations. We do not believe that this search for political unity will ever be discontinued. It has gone too far tfor that. Failure has not daunted the leaders of the movement. They feel that the failure has been mingled with success. If the U. N. should eventually disappear as the League did before it, something better is likely to take its place. We admit that physical science is running ahead ot political science and social science, but the latter are doing their best to keep up in the race. Moral progress is the concern of all men and everyone can do something to aid it. .

SEX CRIME DRIVE
A concentrated and relentless drive against sex crimes will be the major objective of the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association in 1950. = Sheriff Charles F. Haase, Noble county sheriff, said he had received an outline from the Association president ot a cooperative program which is expected to strengthen the activities of all sheriffs of the state .in combatting sex crimes. : :
The program was prepared in a meeting of the executive committee of the Association in Indianapolis and will be augmented by another meeting about the middle ot January. : :
Sheriffs will work closely with school officials and law enforcement officers to educate school children in the devices employed by sex criminals. A newspaper education series is being prepared which will familiarize parents as well as children with th= “do’s” .and “don’ts” of protection against such criminals. &
- The Association, through the local sheriffs, also will intensify its activities to give courts and prosecutors evidence in sex crimes whica will insure maximum penalties. . .
“Sheriffs have a special responsibility confronting them in sex crimes in as much as many such crimes have been committed in lonely areas,” Sheriff Haase pointed out. “The Association, thru its local members, will do everything possible to halt these terrible erimes.”
. A safety . warning that should make ~everyone think is the sign in a . tombstone maker’s window: “We Can Wait—Drive Carefully.”
~ Vacation time will soon be here again. Try to make ilt a time of rest and relaxation, not a matter of miles and hours.
- A physician says a man is slightly taller in the morning than in the evening. We never checked on this theory but have noticed a tendency to become “short” before every payday.
