STORY TELLER

SOL ROCK, sheriff of Borax coun- ¥ ty, liked to tell stories. He was a good sheriff and a good story teller. But when the residents of Borax City had heard each and every one of the officer’s tales for fl:eu:.()th time, they began to weary a |

This was unfortunate. Sol was such a good sheriff that everyone wanted to please him. He was fair and just and persistent. He never failed to get his man, and never failed to see that his prisoner re‘ceived a square deal. = . . . There ‘is, however, a limit to every man's endurance. It therefore came to pass that whenever Sol began one of his long-winded

yarns, first one listener and then another would offer some improvised excuse and hurry away. - One day, however, he dropped in at the All Well saloon and found a bunch of boys lounging about the gaming tables. They seerfied to be doing nothing in particular, and Sol immediately conceived . the idea of entertaining them with on® of his yarns. He hauled up a chair, straddled it, folded his arms on the back and began. - It was an unusually hot day. The story Sol began was the oldest and most uninteresting of his stock. These two things combined proved his ‘'undoing. One by one the boys began to get up, offer their impromptu excuses and drift away. Less than 10 minutes after Sol's yarn had got underway there was no one left but a horse wrangler from the Box O spread, who snored peacefully in a corner. ‘Two days later a report came in that a couple of rustlers had run off some of the Lazy M. stock. Sol saddled up his bay and rode out of town. We watched him go with some misgivings. He had spoken to none of us since the day we walked out on him. We - weren't sure just what to expect. The next day Sol dropped into

the saloon again. About the same bunch of boys were there, and.they looked up expectedly. But Sol said never a word. He merely sat down in his favorite corner and began whittling himself a pipeful of tobacco.

Fifteen minutes of this and one of the boys, unable to stand the strain, asked: “Well, Sol, did yuh get them rustlers?” ] :

~ Sol looked up slowly and nodded. ‘‘Sure, I got 'em. They’re strangers to me, though. Wish some of you boys would drop over to the jail and look 'em over. Maybe someone knows who they be.” - "~ We trooped out of the saloon and down to the jail. The jail was a single-room affair, partitioned off in the middle by a line of iron bars running from floor to ceiling; Behind that fence were two separate cells. ' The front section of the room served as Sol’s office.

: Sol opened the gate in the ironbarred partition and let us all through to get a close scrutiny of the rustlers. As soon as the iast man was inside he slammed .the door and locked it. -

*“Take your time,” he said. “I'm going out to get my dinner. I'll lock this here door while 'm gone. Ain’t takin’ any chances.” With this he went out. He was gone two hours. At sight of him coming back they set up an unanimous shout for liberty. It was pretty crowded behind that partition, and we were fed up on trying to identify a couple of dirty cattle rustlers.

Sol, however, had different ideas. He ignored our demands for freedom, sat himself down and began to whittle himself a smoke. When his old’ corn-cob got drawing well he crossed his legs, settled himself comfortably and began to talk. “Right now,” he said, “‘is as'good a time as any to finish telling you boys that story I started the other day. We got plenty of time and the day is young.”

It was dark before Sol finished. He not only told the story he had started two days.ibefore, but he went through his .repertoire from end to end. Each time he started a new one, we began to yell and shout all sorts of dire threats. Sol merely waited until the noise had subsided, and continued. How long this would have lasted we never knew. But some one finally got it through his skull that Sol wanted appreciation. Therefore, at.the conclusion of the next yarn we applauded loud and long. This seemed to please the old codger. He told another yarn just to see if we were in earnest and when the applause sounded ever more loud and serious, he stood up, ' yawned and unlocked the door.
