“Substance” was the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, September 11.

The Golden Text was: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. Buf God hatt revealed them unto us by his Spirit” (I Corinthians 2: 9, 10). Among the citations which comprised the Lesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: “Now faith is the substance of thing: hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Through faith we understanc that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things whicl are seen were not made of things év)hich do appear” (Hebrews 11: 1, The Lesson-Sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Bhker Eddy: “Spirit is the only substance and consciousness recognized b{ divine Science” (p. 278). “The substance, Life] intelligence, Truth, and Love, which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation; and when we subordinate the false testimony of the corporal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere” (p. 516).

THE BUILDING OF WORLD friendship among children is one of the constructive post-war efforts which is making real headway. Writing to pen pals in other countries i 8 a cherished part of many a school child’s life. And one can imagine what it means to small war victims to receive letters, pictures and gifts from-a friendly correspondent. One outgrowth of this plan to = promote understanding and re--gard among the children of the world 1€ the world Christmas festival which enables our children to share their Christmas or Chanukah (pronounced Han’-i-kah) gifts with children overseas, This year will mark the fifth anniversary of the world Christmas and Chanukah festival. In the past four years nearly one and a half million presents have been sent from boys and girls in this countiry to children overseas. This, of course, has meant that parents and teachers have cooperated to organize ‘“‘share your Christmas’’ movements, '

That is why we are reminding you that it is time to begin gathering this year’'s gifts so they can be shipped by October Ist or 15th. This early date is necessary in order that the gifts may arrive overseas before December 15th, the day of the world Christmas <estivals which will be held in every land. You do not need to go through the complicated business of shipping packages overseas—this is done for you by the sponsoring organization, Church World Service, Inc., 214 East 21st Street, New York 10, N Y.

There are, of course, rules to follow so we suggest that you write at once to the above address for a leaflet describing

~ The point I wished to emphasize] is that parents should help their children enjoy a sense of sharingi and friendship. Guide their purchases so that the gifts will be{ worthwhile—a flimsy match holder may delight you because your chfld‘ chose it with love. But it might be very, disappointing to an expectant| child in Europe or Asia who was| receiving no other gifts. . ! To prevent the wrong gifts going| to a child, each is to be plainly: marked on a securely fastened tag, . whether for a boy or a girl, and of! what age. Also, your child’s name| and address should be plainly; typed or printed on the reverse of! the tag. For the friendship planl works both ways—half of it is the pleasure the receiving child takes! in writing a thank you letter to his ! American friend. * Here are a few don’ts: no military toys or glass can be sent as gifts. No comic books. |

Food is not to be packed with Christmas glfts also, used clothing, whilé acceptable for general tribution, is not to be sen a gift parcel. | Here is a list of gift suggestions for children up to 12 years of age: Stuffed and wooden animals, dolls, toys, small Indian souvenirs, books, crayons, water-colors, plastic clay, scarves, caps, slippers, gloves, mittens, socks, sweaters, hard candy, gum.. ' How about this coming week end as a time for .gathering gifts and helping the children wrap them in gayest fashion. Then they can be packed in one box and mailed to: World Friendship Among Children, Sponsored by Church World Service, Inc., 214 East 21st Street, New York 10, N. Y. -
