XN o= S/HINTS ONN—- - 22 \' - ~ ~ — A\ tythe /\N\\ INDIANA STATE MEDICAL | “ASSOCIATION : TRENCH FOOT T,EOPLE who do a lot of walkE ing in cold, snowy weather, may become victims of frostbite; or trench foot if precautions are! not taken, |

Heavy wool socks may seem like the best thing to wear, but they may make trouble for you. The wearer’s feet will perspire: and his socks get wet. For the rest of the day, the man who: wears wool socks of heavy knit, is literally walking in water. Un-. der these circumstances tiny sores| may develop. They may become large sores at an alarming rate, | The circulation of the feet is impeded, and wulcers may follow. This is the wartime “trench foot” | which may become gangrenous. | Gl’s learned the necessity of! keeping their feet dry. Even un- | der most difficult circumstances in: a trench or foxhole the soldier. would take off shoes and socks, dry .his feet carefully, sprinkle some foot powder in a dry pair. of socks which he was required to! carry, sprinkle more foot powder in his shoes, and then he was sure to avoid “trench foot.” {

Salesmen, mailmen, and winter sports enthusiasts who are out in all kinds of bad weather during the cold months should beware particularly of melting snow and cold rain. Feet chill most easily during such days, since cold water conducts heat away from the feet much more rapidly than snow. Hence feet are in danger of chilling and possible frostbite. Snow conducts the body heat much less rapidly and is less of a danger.
