B Farm Topics By J. L. Guthrie, Noble Farm Agent

Horse owners today were given a summer-time warning that heat stroke and heat exhaustion, in work animals; are two very different problems. Both can be Ilaggely prevented by proper feeding practices and plenty of shade, rest and water, the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association reported. But the similarity ends there. i “When a horse or mule is actually stricken,” the' Association warned, “the symptoms and the methods of treating heat exhaustion are entirely different from those of heat stroke. |

“Heat exhaustion usually attacks an over-efat animal. Symptoms may include extreme dullness, patchy sweating, slow breathing and a weak pulse. Veterinariang find that such cases usually respond to certain stimulants, and the patient should always be blanketed and given rest and quiet.

“Heat stroke, on the other hand, appears as a sudden shock. The horse quits sweating and becomes delirious. or unconscious. Other symptoms include lack of muscular control, a fast pulse, difficult breathing and high fever. “In a heat stroke case, the veterinarian may have to inject solutions in the veins to ward off fatal dehydration. In some cases, a heart stimulant may be indicated, but this should never be attempted without professional supervision. = Nursing procedure usually also includes the use of ice bags or cold water.”

Sunday evening, July 24, 30 Rural Youth Members of Noble County met at the home of June and Eileen Harvey for a social gathering. i Contests, games and a truth or consequence program, in charge of Virginia Parker, provided the evening’s entertainment. . Later in the evening, home-made ice cream and cake which was furnished by the members, was enjoyed by all. :

Large numbers of local farmers who have had to fill every available nook and cranny in their farm buildings because of the big wheat crop and are going to have a tough time finding space for corn and soybeans this fall, now may obtain granary plans from County Agent J. L. Guthrie. Mr. Guthrie has just received from Purdue University a booklet and catalog showing drawings of a number of different kinds of granaries which can be built during the slack time later this summer to get ready for fall harvest. Only this week County Agent Guthrie received from Purdue University’s Agricultural Extension Service this mew publication showing dozens of different kinds and types of granaries, The plans were prepared for those who want to build grain storage space to relieve the bulging sides of farm and terminal market facilities because of the bumper crop of small grain. .

Any local farmer who is interested in new building plans is invited to drep into the County Agent’s office and look over the plan book. It’s full of ideas and helpful information and the working plans are available at nominal cost.
