adaptation of Willard Motley's bestseller of Chicago’s Skid Row character. Humphrey Bogart is the star, but Derek is already called “find of the year.” Derek didn’t achieve success overnight, although it might seem so. He wanted to be an actor long .-before the Army got him for overseas duty. Out of uniform he pounded studio gates; got a movie contract which netted little except a drop in.option. Meanwhile he read Motley’s novel andg, decided he could do Romano. Columbia wanted an unknown for the role. Derek knocked on their door. Result: Success! From where I sit, it’s easy to criticize the other person when we don’t take a good long look at ourselves. Sure, ‘there’ll always be some differences. I'm fond of a temperate glass of beer and maybe. you would prefer ginger ale—but let’s just live and let live. Because when we go out of our way to find things to find fault with in others, ‘chances are they can find a few in us, too. :
