* : \\\/SH‘/N(//, ON/HINTS OK\—_ HEALTH - ~ ~ — A\ mythe /\\ N INDIANA STATE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION" * LYE POISONING EVERY year hundreds of chil &4 dren eat lye and are tragically burned on the lips, tongue and in the throat. Often a child swallows lye because he mistakes the_ white solution for milk. , © When it is realized that a solu tion of lye will eat the stains off 2 ‘kitchen kettle, it is apparent what it will do to the delicate lining of the mouth and throat. The majority of victims of lye poisoning are between the ages of one and five years—B2 per cent of them being in this age group.: The eating of lye immediately causes painful and difficult swallowing Unless treatment is begun early stricture of the esophagus may ‘occur, requiring prolonged care .before the child can regain normal eating habits. Death from Ilye poisoning has
‘been greatly reduced since Congress passed a law in 1927 re ‘quiring that caustics ‘be plainly labeled as poison. Despite all modern therapy the caustic properties of lye make it one of the most dangerous substances that could _ be swallowed by children. . Great care should be exercised by parents in keeping lye safely and definitely out of the reach of chil‘dren. Used lye cans should be completely destroyed so children cannot get hold of them. If a .child swallows lye, or any other .caustic, he should be taken to a 'physician immediately.

If you ever saw an ad like this you'd laugh right out loud. Yet, right now at employment offices throughout our nation, good, capable men and women are being denied good jobs because of one ugly word : DISCRIMINATION Discrimination means, of course, that some people would like to prove that they are better than others, even though science (and religion) says they’re talking through their hats. So they turn thumbs down on men or women who could do the company a lot of good, just because of race, religion or the part of the world their parents came from. Anybody who discriminates against a fellow American because of race or religion is playing right into the hands of those who don’t want Democracy to work. -
