TO FACE THE CAMERA again for the first time, since the birth of a baby last spring, is Martha Scott who will co-star with Jeffery Lynn in RKO Radio’s “Sam Wynn.” Martha was born on a farm and re-

ceived her early training in Missouri. The stage or teaching were her ambitions. She borrowed money to attend the U of Michigan, tried teaching for 6 months, worked in a Chicago departglent

store, got a part in Detroit’s Civic Theatre, did a series of Shakespearean parts then arrived in New York with just $5O and a lot of courage. Her first real break and the turn of her career was the part of” ‘Emily’ in the stage play ‘‘Our Town"” which lead to the same part in the movie and a long-time Hollywood contract. HAGGARD HARRIS HOPS ... and we don’t mean the Junior Hop. Sundays, between dawn and dark are Phil's busiest days when he has both “The Harris-Faye Show” and the “Jack Benny Show” on his

hands — he’s the professor of punctuality! Phil is up at 6:30 a.m. going thru both scripts. All day long, he dashes frantically from one studio to the other for story. conferences and hours of rehearsals as well

as making last minute changes on his own show and necessary substitutions on the other show. Even his dressing room is crowded with people right up to broadcast time. At the signal “on the air” Phil opens the first show and spends a fast 20 minutes directing and going thru his part then joins wife Alice Faye on “The Harris-Faye Show” (at 7:30 pm. EST just as the announcer is introducing him) for a half hour of songs, gags and laughs. Day is done, brother, (at 8) but we forgot to ask: When he eats, how he keeps the 2 scripts unscrambled and who said it’s fun to be famous?

INDIANA-MICHIGAN ADOPT NEW LOOK FOR TRUCKS In keeping with the modern trend from old, dull and drab colors to the “New Look” in gayer colors, Col. R. Otto Probst, manager of the Elkhart Distriet of the Indiana & Michigan Electric Company gave notice to the cfiti-{ zens of Elkhart today to be on the lookout for something new and different in the color of the company’s trucks. As rapidly gs possible, all of its trucks will be changed from the present color to a fleet color of Omaha Orange trimmed with black. This color is to take the place of the solid black which has been standard for the company’s trucks for many years. The new color scheme is being adpoted for all of the electric company’s trucks throughout

THE LIGONIER BANNER

“PLEASE TO BEGIN". These words, spoken every Friday night over the CBS network by Fletcher Markle, introduce the “Ford Theater”, one of the finest dramatic shows on the air. Markle’'s rise has

been meteoric. Only 27 years old, he was unknown to American Audiences little more than a year ago. Today, hg directs the greatest stars of stage and screen in radioj (and writes some of the adapta-

tions) for the “Ford Theater” which has been acclaimed by critics as “the best program in radio.” While serving in England with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Markle was commissioned by the British Ministry of Information to write the documentary film on the Robot bomb. He came to American radio in 1947 when he wrote and directed 3 plays for “Columbia Workshop”. In addition to directing “Ford Theater” he is director and co-author of the new film “Jigsaw” soon to be released. . HERE’S ANOTHER MISSOURI MISS who has made cinema-news, Next to be released is Warner Bros. “The Girl From Jones Beach”, costarring Virginia Mayo and Ronald Reagan and two more will follow on

it’s heels. Virginia decided, at the age of 6, to be an actress (without encouragement from her family). Luck was on her side, however, for her aunt operated a dramatic school which she attended. She made her

first appearance at the age of 8 and following high school joined a vaudeville act. The act reached Broadway in “Banjo - Eyes” with Eddie Cantor—Billy Rose saw her and signed her for his famous Diamond Horseshoe, Goldwyn “looked and gave her a contract and Warn 2 ers signed her in 1948. Strangely enough, Virginia’s real name is Virginia Jones.

the territory served in Indiana and Michigan.. ' | At the same time: the trucks are painted with the new colors, new decals of the Company’s new name will be placed on the door panels of the truck cabs. - According to Col. Probst, the company’s adoption of the Omaha Orange color in preference to the black now in use was for several reasons. Color experts say that Omaha Orange is onc of the most visible, day or might, of any combination of the spectrum. Since utility trucks are often parked in unusual places, as wel] as along highways in proximity to traffie, a high visibility is very desirable. The new color scheme was adopted not only for its safety and visibility features but also because

Probst said whenever soméone sees an Omaha Orange painted truck parked along the side of a road or street, in front of his house or in back of his garage, he will immediately know that it is the Indiana & Michigan Electric Company at work strengthening and increasing the efficiency of his electric service or repairing storm or other damage. ‘ ~
