START WORK ON NEW POWER PLANT FORI & M
Lawrenceburg, Ind., Sept. 1— Philip Sporn, president of the Indiana & Michigan Electric company and it's parent company American Gas and Electric, in the presence of officials of the two companies and a number of invited guests, broke ground today as the initial step in the construction of a new power plant to be located just outside of this city. The site of the plant comprises some 200 acres of land recently acquired by the company and lies just north of the town limits in Dearborn county. It will be known as “Tanners Creek Plant.” . This is the first step taken by Indiana & Michigan Electric company since the announcement of it’s merger with Indiana Service corporation, as part of it's $55,000,000 expansion program which in four years will bring 368,000 horsepower (275,000 kilowatts) additional capacity to the company’s generating facilities. The plant itself will cost $15,000,000 and the initial unit will have a capacity of 185,000 horsepower.
The initial contract for construction of this plant, involving the excavation and removal of some 400,000 cubic yards of earth, has been let to George B. ‘Herring & Son of Mansfield, O. The construction work will be pushed rapidly under the supervision of the engineers of American Gas and Electric Service corporation. The plant is expected to go into operation in December of 1950. ‘
