After Many Had Failed

After many other inventors had failed, George Selden completed the first successful internal combustion engine in 1877. The Duryea brothers made the first auto to ‘run on a public highway in 1893. R. TAKE-MY WORD FOR IT ~ WORDS TO WATCH # * * @ Today let us discuss a few familiar and important words which often are given dialectal pronunciations even by otherwise careful speakers. A good word to begin with is ‘“since,” which many of us pronounce exactly like ‘‘sense.” Be sure to pronounce since with the short *“i”” sound so that it rhymes ‘with “mince, prince,” thus: sinss. The word ‘“‘been’’ once was spelled b-e-n, and the pronunciation ‘‘ben” was more or less current in ‘America before the turn of the century. (For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: ‘‘lt

The Standard American pronunciation is: bin, to rhyme with Yein i e For years this column has sought to stamp out the error of pronunecing “rinse” like the word ‘““wrench.” Progress has been satisfactory. But occasionally women still are heard “wrenching’’ their hands, stockings, underwear, dishes and what not, although to wrench (twist violently) such things is to subject them to rather harsh and destructive treatment. It would be -much more seenily to ‘‘rinss” them. Rinse, like since, should rhyme with “mince.”

Mind, I'm all for material improvements. But from where I sit, the real goodness of our country life is that spirit of tolerance, moderation, and good fellowship.
