Misname Balsam Just as Panama hats come from Ecuador and not from Panama, balsam of Peru is an exclusive product of El Salvador. Some believe that the term was given through a misinterpretation of the Indian word “piru’’ meaning pottery vessel and not the fabled kingdom of Peru. It is, however, more generally thought that the false name originated from the fact that the product was confused with Peruvian goods when galleons bore it from El Salvador to Peru to be trans-shipped to Spain.
