» FUMBLING INEPTITUDE Esinaa s Indiana citizens are witnessing a spectacle unseen heretofore in political history. The frantic attempts of a befuddled, funibling, votehungry Republican leadership vainly trying to patch up and rewrite a platform rubber stamped three months ago by the hand-picked delegates to their state convention. The GOP platform ignored the bonus question, so now a committee has recommended bonuses for veterans of the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War 11. They laid that hot one in the lap of Governor Gates in an attempt to deceive Hoosier veterans of World 11. 1t is still resting in his lap. . :
The Democratic state platform promises Veterans of World War II “equitably adjusted compensation.” The GOP belatedly and desperately looking for votes promises veterans of the last three wars a bonus. But the veterans will not forget that it was a Republican President—Herbert Hoover—who ordered the hungry ex-soldiers of World War I driven at bayonet point from America’s capital. So, they will not be fooled by the efforts of the Indiana GOP to get their party
“right” with ex-servicemen and women. Auditor A. V. Burch is campaigning on a proposal to re-establish a direct primary. That question too was ignored in the GOP state platform. Burch says he was handed the platform and had nothing to say about its planks. The GOP state committee says Burch speaks for Burch. <
: Governor Gates told the state convention delegates he favored returning the beer and liquor wholesale problem to the industry. That was his personal shingle to the liquor plank which is supposed to be the cure-all for the disgraceful political control that his administration foisted on the people of Indiana. : . These 11th hour maneuvers will fool no one. They will be judged for exactly what they are—a vivid demonstration of the fumbling inepitude of the Republican leadership in Indiana. - '
