Paper Shortage Most Acute Since War Began »

For the first time since - Pearl| Harbor, the supply of paper has be‘come really serious. According to the War Production Board, unless something is done about it immediately, ‘there may be a shortage of 75,000 tons of waste paper during the last quarter of the year. ' ' “The present shortage is the result of the tremendously increased demand for paper used in the war effort,” says County Salvage Chairman Leo G. Dauenhauer. “Then, too, because of labor shortage, comparatively little pulp wood is being cut today. o : More than 700,000 items used in the war effort require paper in some form“or other. For example: 25 tons ~50,000 pounds—of paper are required for the blue prints in building one: battleship. It takes 2% pounds of waste paper to make one prisoner-of-war box in’ which we ship food to our men in prison’ camps.

“You can help by saving newspapers, magazines, cartons, and brown paper, firmly tying them in bundles about 12 inches high. City residents should then place the bundles at the curb on collection day, while ‘rural residents ‘should give them to the rural mail carrier or a 4-H Club member.

The Boy Scouts are cooperating 100% in the waste paper drive under the supervision of Rev. Underwood in Ligonier, Mack D. Howell in Cromwell, and Robert Maggart in Albion; with the High School Band assisting Charles Shell; in the paper collection at Rome City. . " :
