Blight Attacks | Indiana Soybeans . The pod and stem blight d'~sease of soybeans in causing some Jesses in Indiana this' year. Grow ‘ ers have asked about the dead soybean plan#is ithat break off at the roots when pulled froum .he soil. A common characteris‘e (f the affected plants ig that they do not shed their leaves us the normal soybean plant does. When examined more closely, a rough, slightly swollen ecanker can be found at the point where the stem broke from the root. Ordinarily th-s disease—occurs on hoth stems and pods, but the summer hct “spell’” apparently did some good, by preventing the disease from spreading to the pods. Omnce the fungus gttacks the pods, it spreads into the beans, carrying the «lisease in a way that isg practically impos‘isihle to c¢-mtrol. This point should interest soybean growers becauge the absence of the
fungus in the seed will reduce the chances of spread of the disease and will really make the rroblem of contrcl more gimple than otherwise, -
The fungus spends the winter on the stems and in the seed of the soybean. This year it will be mostly in the stems as numerous small black specks near the base of the stem. Within these specks are produced spores that will infect the new soybean plants next year. ¥ \ .
