No Open Season For Hen Pheasants in ’39 The open season for pheasants which extends from Nov, 10 to 16 this year applies only to cock birds and the hen pheasants are protected by law, Virgil M. Simmons, commissioner of the Department of Conservation pointed out today. An impression has been found in some parts of the state that there would be an open season on hen pheasants this year. Provision for an open season on ‘hen pheasants was made by the General Assembly but investigations by the Division of Fish and ‘Game revealed that continuation of the closed season on these birds was advisable through the 1939 hunting season. Hen pheasants have been protected in Indiana since the propagation of these birds was started several years ago to develop additional hunting for Hoosier sportsmen. The state’s first open season on cock pheasants was in 1936. That original season today has been lengthened gradually without any apparent ‘damage to the’ pheasant stock until this year six days of pheasant ‘hunting has been authorized.
