Gross Income Tax - Due October 15th

As the current state gross income taxpaying period opened to. day more then 62,000 quarterly taxpayers received gross income tax return forms through the mail.

Under a policy adopted by th? state Gross Income Tax Divisioun last year return blanks are mailed directly to retail merchants, partnerships, corporations, and individuals who have been classed as quarterly payers from the tax division’s records. ' Thousands of additional return forms of all kinds have been sent to- 150 automobile license branches and 250 special distribution pointg where they will be available to all taxpayers during lthe present tax-paying period, which extends to October 15. :

Gilbert K. Hewit, acting director of the division, said the mailing of the return forms directly to those groups of taxpayers was eipected not -only to be a convenience to the taxpayers but was being combined with other procedures which would expedite the handling and checkLing of the forms when returned to the division.

“The lists are still being con. structed and may not be complete,” Mr. Hewit said, emphasizing pointedly that those who do not receive blanks and who are required to file quarterly, should obtain blanks at their nearest auto license branch. | All persons whose tax for the quarter exceeds $lO are required by law to file returns and pay the tax. *

All taxpayers are granted an exemption of $250 per quarter. Retail merchants, however, are granted an exemption of $750 per quarter upon receipts from selling at retail. This exemption is not in addition to the regular exemption.

‘Penalties for failure to file returns when due range from 10 per cent to 50 per cent of the tax due, with interest charges at the rate of 1 per cent per month from the date the tax was due until paid. The minimum penaity is $2.00
